mother of perl hes back again

hey all

starting to dig around a little easier in the os ( really enjoying it too)

how do i make a shortcut

i know it sounds simple but ive been looking around and i just cant figure it out

windows you right click and say create shortcut or send to desktop as shortcut

in linux i right click it and i get no such option

so i was looking around and i saw if i rightclick empty desktop space i get the option to "creat launcher" witch sounds about right so i pointed it to the file i want and created it but now i have no idea where it went ( i thought since i right clicked it on the desktop thats where it would show up.

and for bonus points
how can you get something to show up on the applications drop down menu ( the "start" button)

thanks alot for any help

well you can create symlinks with

ln -s

but im guessing your just asking about a desktop shortcut, which would depend on your windowmanager

so which one do you use?

you could probably create symlinks in the $HOME/desktop directory.

What DE? Gnome/KDE? In KDE if what you want on the desktop is in a menu or something you can simply drag it onto the desktop and it will as you "Copy/Move" here. Just say copy and voila! I am sure Gnome works in a similar way. For the menu, I know KDE has a "K Menu Editor". In Gnome there should be a settings menu. From there go to Menu Editor.

If there isn't a menu entry for what (in KDE) you want on the desktop right click on the desktop, choose "Create New > File > Link to Application". Type in the name you want, then under the Application tab, in "Command" type in the command that is required to start the program you want, ex. firefox. Under Gnome it should be a pretty similar process.

I hope thats what you meant!

Were you logged in as root? If so check your root home folder or desktop folder.

nevermind,

i logged in as root and made one and BAM it just appears so i figure somethings up

so i navigate over to my home dir and under desktop are like 15 icons all saying ftree
( and i double checked before logged out and none were there)

so i logged back in as me and guess what............... 15 icons on my desktop

so to see if it was a log out and back in thing i tried to make another and it just pops up now

weird but it works now
