Thanks guys.
I appreciate your help.
He will be overclocking by the way.

What's the pc going to be used for? e-mail/surfing? video editing/gaming? This is very important to know when building a PC.

I wouldn't bother buying an Athlon XP, an A64 setup isn't much more, and it will be much quicker and will upgrade further. I'd put this above other upgrades.

80gb isn't as big as you think, what are the price breaks like? can you get a 120gb for $10-20 more? I think it'd be worth it.

Check prices on 9800 Pro's, they are good, but the price of a 6600GT is getting low, and may be worth the extra money.

I'd go with 1gb of ram, it's a worthy upgrade if your a power user/gamer.

If your not going to overclock, those heatsinks will work just fine. If you are, there are better ones out there.

My Two Cents Worth

The xp system you designed is solid and in its time would have been very strong. Now you have to consider the A64 alternatives. The cost is almost the same the preformance is a lot stronger.
I have attached the basics just to give idea on what is availible:

There still would be a case, power supply.heatsink and fan but you have pleanty of room in the budget and the store seems to have most of the parts you will need.

There is no reason to still go AXP, if he is really that tight in budget..he can still go A64 s754..but I would recommend him go with the 939. There are some PCI-E 754 boards out..you may check on those and get a 3000+ NC with it. Also you are buying the last generation video card too..for that price I would get a 6600GT at the least. Everything else just looks fine to me and for cooling...you can never go wrong with Thermalright, XP-90 would be great if you deicde to do some ocing with that rig. If no ocing, then value ram with stock cooler would be just fine.

Well, I would do things very differently. I would never spend all that swag on dated technology. An A64 939 based system is far superior. Forget the arctic silencer, for that matter forget AGP. Get an inexpensive nf4 board or if budget permits a DFI. Your not building a high end system so why buy a $50 mouse. You can get buy with stock cooling on a 3000 Venice.
Here's some ideas.

Okay, throw in your headphones and Sony DVD your in there for $1275 with a system that is not dated out of the box.

CDJ a DFI would be great but he can't afford it with the ram you suggest as you forgot about a monitor. (Your gear comes to about $1150 without a case psu or monitor) I do agree with you about the Lite-On with software and the need for a floppy drive which I forgot.

Sorry to double post but can you suggest another case that is also pretty light as he will probably be bringing it over to my place to play games. He doesn't live that far but doesn't have a car so it may be a little difficult.

oh yea. he will be overclocking very slightly with it.
