Easiest way to transfer data/files from one computer to another.

Ok, not sure if this is in the right section, but here it goes...

I want to know what would be the easiest and fastest way to transfer files (pictures/songs) between two computers. I've thought of using large capacity flash drives (512mb) and using an external hard drive but the problem with the external hard drive idea is the external is firewire and only one of the computers has firewire. I've also tried using ftp but it is kindof a pain to set up (unless someone knows of an easy way to set up an ftp thing).

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated, THANKS!

Any way you can network the two systems? That would be by far the easiest way.

yep, or burn the items to a DVD or CD depending on the size of the files of course. Also its easy if you have an ipod, or a mp3player with high capacity that you can just pop in the usb since you said one of the computers doesnt have firewire.

I know prettymuch squat about networking but I imagine that would probably be a decent way. Could you outline the best way to network two computers together?

I am networked, but I have also used my Maxtor 40gig USB external to transfer up to 40 gigs from one computer to another.

If both computers have Windows XP, its even easier.
Make sure your computers have NIC's, 2 regular network cables (not cross-overs), and either a switch or a router. Just connect the cables from the computer to the switch/router, and make sure the computer workgroup is the same, and it would be fine. You can share stuff thru 'My Shared Document'

Yeah, both have XP. Thanks for the info kill me, I'll have to try that but we don't have router or anything where the one computer is. Thanks for all the help guys

I'd use ftp. That way they don't even have to be on the same workgroup, just enter in the ips and its good.

If you don't have a hub of some sort, just buy a crossover cable. It looks exactly like a network cable, but 2 pairs of wires are switched. This is so you can connect the computers directly together, without the use of a hub. You can pick one up an most retail store that carries network cables.

This would be the easiest/fastest way to transfer data between 2 computers that are close together.

A crossover would be the cheapest and probably fastest way. Buy one online or at a store(normally MUCH cheaper online). It would also be possible to change a cable from straight to crossover, but you would need a crimp tool and a new connector.

I have an 60GB 7,200 2.5" Notebook USB drive that allows me to make all the transfers I need.

I also have a 1GB flash disk (USB) that I can use for smaller transfers.

I'll have to invest in a crossover cable and see how it works

Once I connect the two computers, do I follow steps as though they were connected together with a hub and do the "My Shared Documents" thing? I think I actually deleted the my shared documents folder actually! hahaha

It would not be easy using a crossover cable. You will have to do extra steps inorder to even find each other.

You should not have to, unless I am forgetting somthing as I have done this in the past too. I do believe all you have to do is make sure each computer is on the same subnet, and you set both ip address EX. comp 1 192.168.0.100 comp2 192.168.0.101

Its quite simple really start from the

control panel -> Network Connections -> right click on Local Area Connection -> In the box under "This connection uses the following items" look for "Internet Protocal (TCP/IP)" -> click it once, then hit Properties -> click the bubble "Use the following IP address" -> IP address: 192.168.0.100 Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 Gateway: I think you leave it blank Preferred DNS server: Also leave this blank.

Now when you want to go back to regular internet click in the same box we changed the IP the "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS servers automatically"

Yeah and if you deleted "my shared folder" it's easy to create a shared folder too, so don't worry.

Create a new folder and right click on it. Then click sharing. Then change "do not share this folder" to share this folder and badda bing badda boom you are good.
