Removed heatspreader from P4-Northwood

Well, I removed the heatspreader from my Pentium 4 Northwood. I scratched the surface, but it POSTed. I did it because my temperatures were skyrocketing (around 110F, usually it is around 90F), and the contact between the heatsink and CPU was fine. so I figured the contact between the core and the heatspreader was shot. (the heatsink was cold to the touch). The medium they were using was dried out and flaking---I can't imagine it conducting heat...

I have the heat spreader in acetone to clean it off, I will make sure it is level, and put it back -- after applying some AS5, I will put it back, attaching it with super glue. If you want me to post pictures, I will.

Post some load temps after you have done that.

Too late for pictures, BTW... I just applied the AS5 and put the superglue in place. I am going to let it set for a while, before using it.

Strange... while POSTing, it stops POSTing on the list of components once it reaches ACPI Controller...

They are fine. I had to reset my CMOS... then it succeeded. I am right now overclocked from 100mhz FSB to 133, IE, 2.4ghz. Also, that makes my RAM at over DDR-400 (they are DDR-333 by default). I will run Prime-95 and get some load temps.

I hate to say it, but the temperatures do not seem to be signifigantly different.

Yeah... you have to be VERY careful. Back in the Socket 423 days, I killed 2 (two, dos, zwei) CPUs trying this. I was more careful this time, but if those scratched had been even a little deeper, I could have killed it.

I take it you can't take the heat spreader off again? I would have just left it off, I'm sure it would have helped your temps.

The heatsink would not have made contact with the core

Well, it's designed to make contact where the heatspreader is... I would probably need to file down the screws.

yes i guess you would have to file the screws, but just alittle bit.

I like keeping my temperatures down... in my opinion, 150F is insanely high, and something I wish to avoid.

AFAIK, Super Glue doesn't eat through plastics... I suppose it itself is a plastic...

If I remove the IHS from my P4 640 and I try to mount the heatsink on the actual DIE, would I have to make a little shim surrounding the DIE to prevent putting on too much pressure? I'm just worried that if I do this, I'll crush my core while putting the heatsink back on.

EDIT

Did some reading, and I would probably need to design my own little shim to prevent my waterblock from crushing the core. For 3°C-4°C, I don't really see the risk of killing my CPU a risk worth taking. Not to me, at least.
