Anyone dremel with parts still in the case?

I was just wondering if I was the only one or not.

I usually will cover everything inside with a towel and then go to town. Aftwards I blow it all off with an air compressor.

When ever I go to mod a case I Remove all the parts. And stick them into static bags an put them somewhere safe... like under the bed..... rofl! I normally dont mod my working pc much. Ive been busy working on a smaller pc that I have cut into the case many many times

I always remove all my parts. I knwo it can be a big hassle, but for me, i have lots of time, and little money, so its worth it knowing my hardware will work when i put it back in.

Yes I have. It can be done so long as you use masking tape to catch the dust.

I've done it a lot on several different computers. Usually to put an extra fan in or something. If I'm going to cut the case up big time, I do prefer to have it empty because I'm just going to be moving it around so much.

I did it some last night in fact because I needed to cut a small hole to run the water tubing through but like I mentioned I'll blow the whole thing out good with the air compressor.

Has anyone killed any parts from doing this?

How do you put the tape to catch the dust? Do you put a tape dome around the cut or something?

I never have and would never take that chance. Not worth the risk IMO.

However I'm sure there are a few people out there that do this. These are also the guys that use fingers to check fan speed and rotation and change components out on computers while not wearing a grounding strap, standing on a carpet in their socks.

I do it, but after I vacuum out my case with my handy dustbuster, and then blow the rest out with canned air. No problems with it yet. (its been like 6 years)

Yeah, I hate to admit it, but I'm one of those guys. Every time I do it, I keep thinking how stupid it is. But I make sure that my grounding strap is connected from my socks to the carpet. Common sense will kick in one day.

I prefer to change components while the system is running, not wearing a grounding strap, standing on carpet in my socks while petting a cat using a balloon.

However, I'm too scared to dremel my case without removing everything, except my socks so my feet don't get cold.

The reason I do however is because Im a hardware reviewer so I get parts for free, and as such have lots of backup parts

Dude, that is hillarious!

I don't like to touch running fans. I once bumped the fan by accident on a thermaltake heat sink for an AMD and it cut my fingers bad!

I once bumped an SI-97 on my XP 2500+ and killed it. Got to explain to the wife why I needed a new CPU all of a sudden.

Yea, I haven't had much luck with SI-97 but that is because I bought it used and apparently broken. Everyone else around here with one appears to have had good luck and low temps. Just don't move it around much.
