CPU or MB ?

Hello,

me wify has a celly D 325 @ 533 (19x 133ish?) (2.54GHZ)

I wanted to upgrade her & was thinking about the 330 celly D (2.8/3.0GHZ)

it would be a drop in upgrade / no bios update needed.

but then the thought occured to me, why not a mobo instead?

Opinions? other options?

it's all packed under a Compaq chassis. so the drop in might be easier.
& speed is not a concern of hers, just reliability.

I newegged a cpu & they want like $110 USD for a 330.

TIA

I say get a decent motherboard for it. That way you could do a pretty simple overclock and get your D 325 to 330 speeds. They're pretty overclockable CPUs, and I doubt you'd have any problems on stock cooling.

So how does moving from a celery 325 to a 330 help reliability and not speed? It sounds like you are defining your objectives and then selecting a course of action directly in opposition of them.

she wants a reliable computer.
wants it to not be a slug.

by staying with a drop in replacement, it keeps current reliability & increasing speed a bit.

but going from a 2.5 to a 3.0..... i doubt it'll be that noticable.

the current hhd is one of those factory partitioned ones, with the backup sector on it.

& the 330 is identical in specs to a 325. just a larger multiplier (22 from 19)

Compaq were notorious in the past for using proprietary components. Don't know if they still do or not, but that's something to research before buying a mobo then finding out the power supply and case is not compatible.

If you want a faster CPU with more performance to drop in for an easy upgrade, look for a good used P-4 in the 3 gig range. Not only will this give lots more cache, but she will also benefit for having hyperthreading.

You didn't say how much RAM her system has, but that is sometimes a good bang for the buck for adding performance to an OEM system. If it already has plenty of RAM, then that's cool. Just make sure it's running in dual channel mode.
