I would have to say the 9600xt. The 9500 pro is pretty much a dead match for the 9600 pro.

Actually the 9500pro is about a match for the XT in most cases too :S

Make sure you are comparing the non-overclocked 9500pro vs the non-oc'd 9600pro... in the case it beats it by a good bit in many tests.

I just did a few comparisons last week (ATI site) as which one has better specs (as Iam upgrading a old workstation's v/card) ....

I found the 9500 Pro to have 8 pipelines vs the 9600 "series" only has 4 pipelines . I would think the 9500 Pro would be a better choice just for that reason . Hence the reason I just purchased a 9500 Pro for the old workstation this week .
Seems the 9500 Pro is a closer match to the 9700 Pro over the 9600 series of cards .

The 9500pro has slightly more fill rate than a 9600xt, but it also has less memory bandwidth. I'd say both cards are about even, but I'd favor the 9600 since it tends to overclock to a higher speed (according to futuremark), but also because it runs a lot cooler. The 9600's are .13 micron vs .15, and don't require a molex.

Exactly! Half the pipes but twice the clock. Both are pretty equal, but i would buy the 9600xt cause they run cooler like written above.

overclocked the 9500 pro would spank the 9600xt all day and night. I'm surprised how much credit you folks are giving a 4 pipe card. Considering the 9500pro is an old version 9700pro this comparison shouldn't even be close.

?? What does that mean?

Anyway... wasn't the 9600xt supposed to be on par with the 9700? I know in practice, it turned out to be slower, but it was originaly intended to replace the 9500pro.

He means the 9500 Pro is the 128-bit version of the 9700 Pro.

If you are looking at taking a gamble, try to find a 256-bit 9500 non-Pro and softmod it to 8 pipes. If the pipes aren't broken, then you have yourself a full 9700 Pro (or maybe its just 9700... It was so long ago, I don't remember, but you have yourself a better card than a 9500 Pro for cheaper.)
