Overclocking or dummies... I need help!!

Hi, I am fairly new to the world of overclocking, but since I bought a new PC I thought I might as well try it out. To be honest, so far I have had very little success. First up, here is my system info: Intel P4 3.2ghz, 200mhz FSB. Asus P5GD1-VM motherboard, and Radeon x700 Video Card. Two 512mb Corsair DDR2 RAM. Is DDR2 the correct term? :-s.

So, I've taken into account that with my processor the only way to overclock is to increase the FSB speed. OK, sorted. So, how do I do that?!?!??!!!!???! I did download one program, clockgen, from www.cpu-z.com. I moved the slider up 5mhz and my PC froze. It must of been doing something then.

Any tips? By the way my PC is an alienware (www.alienware.com) so I'm hoping not to have any overheating problems. I suppose I also need to know how to adjust the voltage. When and how should I do this? I've looked in the BIOS but I just get lost. I hope someone can help!

First - Welcome to OCForums

Second - actually you have DDR, not DDR2

Third - go to http://www.lavalys.com/ download "everest"
go to http://www.memtest.org/ download "memtest86"
go to http://www.mersenne.org/prime.htm download "prime95"

ok those downloads will help you as you can monitor your temps/fans/voltages with everest and you can test ram with memtest and the cpu with prime95 and you do need to test in order to have a good oc

now your cpu locks after a 10mhz increase most probably because of the ram, it probably isnt a oc friendly ram, what you need to do is grab the manual for your board, if it didnt come with the PC go to asus.com and download it, look for bios settings and memory settings, once you figure it out a bit go into bios and change your ram speed from 400 to 320 and try setfsb again, 5mhz increments would be my suggestion, run prime95 after each increase and monitor temps/psu voltages in everest

I always say go via bios, but clockgen is also a good way

I can't find anything to adjust in my BIOS, it's a load of poo. The FSB etc is not adjustable.

In my opinion you should change all parameters via BIOS not using on the fly tools cos sometimes hangs...

You should read mainboard's manual it says where you can find FSB adjust etc...

I just looked over the manual for your board and it doesnt seem to have any kind of settings indeed, Im sorry, but it appears the board simply isnt OC friendly. you could use clockgen and push the fsb but that will also push the ram past its spec and the pci/agp as well (dangerous for vcard and hard drive)

I believe this board can actually be overclocked(at least the 478 version of it) however it would probably require a different bios than the one that Alienware includes.

Also Clockgen slowly unless your looking for insane screenshot pictures, that 5mhz memory was an extra 80mhz CPU which had to shock it just alittle.

Its a VM board. It doesnt have overclocking options in the BIOS.
