hi

i've been reading another thread called: Memory Dividers, why don't people use them?

in that thread, some people have listed their memory bandwidth from memtest
everyone's bandwidth seems to be above 2000MB/s
sorry for double posting...
i did ask my question in that thread, but someone told me to post in the memory section, as there are lots of memory guru's ;)

i downloaded the latest memtest image (1.60)
but when i run it it tells me that my memory b/w is less than 2000MB/s
i struggle to keep mine in the 1800's
at the moment it reads 1697MB/s
does anyone have any ideas why? what's wrong?

even if i set the ram to 250MHz 2.5-5-5-9 it only registers as 1953MB/s

also i was told that winrar has a built in benchmark (just open it and press ALT+b) and a score above 500 is a pass
at the moment, i score 497-499
not exactly fast for an athlon64 :(

Oh goodness, those timings are terrible. :p

2T is something you'll have to run, but you should be able to get better timings out of your RAM. Have you tried anything besides 2.5-5-5-9? Bring it down to 2.5-4-4-8, or 2.5-3-3-7 if you can.

i can run them at 2.0-5-4-7 up to 225MHz then i have to use 2.5-5-4-7
at 250MHz memtest says 1993MB/s

the SPD readings say:

This is very strange. It could mean one of two things. Either you arent in dual-channle or you are not using 1T. See if either applies

not yet, but this memory is supposed to run at 250MHz with 2.5-5-5-9 timings

edit: i'm definately in dual channel,

but i have to run at 2T because i have 4 sticks of memory

on the sides of the memory are stickers saying 4-4-7
but since filling all the slots, i can't pass memtest at 2-4-4-7
that's why i'm using 2-5-4-7

i'll try 2.5 now

Thats the cause of all your problems unfortunatly. A64 does not have the capability to run either fast or well with 4 sticks. I bet if you removed 2 and hit 1T it would be alot better.

i just tried 2.5-3-3-9 and that gets 1757MB/s
it's a bit better than 1697  but i'd have to memtest it to make sure it's ok
if i could get it to run (stable) at 2.5-4-4-7 @ 250MHz then that would get me 2078MB/s

i'll switch off the pc, remove 2 sticks, and see what it says at 1T

with just 2 sticks:
(2T) 209MHz 2.5-3-3-9 = 1822MB/s
(1T) 209MHz 2.5-3-3-9 = 1967MB/s

still not exactly record braking but a bit better

well i was looking into buying a DFI motherboard, and then some watercooling, but i think first of all, i'll be looking for a decent pair of 1GB sticks

can anyone reccomend a pair that will clock to 250MHz?

thanks for all the help and advice guys

May I suggest using everest software to benchmark your ram.
Also try 1:1 ratio (bios setting for ram at 200mhz)first and set your cpu fsb to stock (default) and then benchmark w/ everest and see your bandwidth. Or put your ram on auto and start raising your cpu fsb little at a time (205, 210, 215,..etc) and see how far you can OC w/ ram on auto. This way you will have some values to go by and see your ram's limit+ can also see how much ram's bandwidth has increased.

Memtest isn't the most accurate piece of software to judge max bandwidth.... Memtest is probably just running the test slower than what your machine is capable of..

Besides, my memtest bandwidth, is almost always much lower than what other software calculates my bandwidth to be.

but i'm not comparing it to other software, i'm just comparing to other pepoles memtest results, and mine are a LOT slower :( like 1000MB/s slower

Just out of curiosity, have you tried to test your numbers with only 1 GB?

As far as the winrar test, I only get 400 Kb/s on a 3.4 2Mb cache machine I just built.

with just 2 sticks:
(2T) 209MHz 2-3-3-6 = 1822MB/s
(1T) 209MHz 2-3-3-6 = 1967MB/s

at the moment with 4 sticks of memory at 209MHz 2-3-3-6 2T, on the winrar test i'm getting 510

I've got one stick of 1GB ECC Registered Corsair XMS running at 2786MB/s and I'm running really high timings, stock, even though I have active cooling, I just don't know what a stable OC would be, but this ram is rediculously fast just by itself in 3-3-3-8-2T with one stick, any recomendations.

I looked at your memtest screenshot, and I noticed something odd. You have 200+ Megs of "reserved memory". Usually this number is < 1 Meg. It might have something to do with your problem. I'd reccomend getting memtest86

http://memtest86.com/

and check out what that program gives you, instead of memtest86+... It may be a bug...

Also, check your superpi score... You should hit around 34-35s with your config...
