I Am Now The Owner Of The Coolest Keychain In The World **sigh**

well, to make a long story short, i offered to sell my 6800GT (agp) to a co-worker for $250, as I am upgrading to PCI-E (just waiting on ddr2 ram to come thank god), and as most of you know, i water cool, so naturally i put some copper OCZ BGA ramsinks on it to cool the ram it (most of you might know where i'm going with this at this point)

when i mounted them, i used 2 parts arctic silver epoxy and 1 part arctic silver 5 thermal paste (as i've seen many people here suggest incase of future removal)

i stuck my card in a anti-static bag and put it in the -10º freezer we have down in the basement for 2 1/2 hours, pull it out, and held my breath as i tried to pull off the first ramsink (i had to take them off for the stock heatsink to fit on so i could sell it to my friend)

i hear some cracking, like that of glue breaking, so i apply pressure in the opposite direction, and all of a sudden **SNAP!** "oh thank god... the ramsink came off, yay!" upon lifting the pliers and ramsink away "hrm... where's the black RAM chip... OH MY F***ING GOD AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

so right now i'm at my moms computer with dried tears in my eyes trying to pull myself together, as i have just absolutely killed my leadtek 6800gt, which has a warranty that doesn't cover physcial damages, etc.

so i'm left with a beautiful $320 6800gt PCB with no ram chips on it (pulled off the other 7, not one ramsink came off without taking the GOD DAMN RAM WITH IT

so as the title says, i think i'm gonna turn the core into a freaking $320 keychain as a symbol of my "accomplishment" **cough** f*** up **cough**

i would give you pics of the damage, but my moms computer doesnt like the digi cam software i have, so oh well... hopefully she'll be nice and loan me $30 for a PCI card so I can atleast browse the forums until my DDR2 ram gets here

whoopty f***in doo!

Wow! Feel for you man. Very sad indeed. I thought I heard a crack when I installed the V-1 last night. Fortunately the sound was because I sat on my case siding and put a dent in it

Wasnt there a way that if you didnt destroy the contacts you could of just superglued the ram chip back on and hoped for the best? Unfortunitly since you pulled all of em off there is slim to no chance of fixing it. Sorry man. That sucks.

Still, sorry for your loss, I'm going to try using twist ties & Ceramique on my nu's ram once I get my loop set up. If you can, show pics of the keychain afterward at least

if you are willing to sacrifice the card, perphaps doing this might also make it worthwhile. If all you did was crack the solder joints this could work. Mass produced surface mount PCBs typically use convection to apply components. If you have a heat-gun, let it heat up and apply airflow parallel with the PCB for a few seconds. If the gun is hot enough, you just might be able to heat it up enough to reapply the chip. you could also use a little epoxy to secure it JIC. You would be surprised at the type of signals you can get by just making contact.

I agree it doesn't hurt to try. My old 9700 pro had a metal heatspreader over the IC that controls memory voltage. When i tried to take it off to mod the card, i ripped the IC off, I bought a new IC, soldered it in, and bam worked 100% fine again. As long as the memory module isn't phyiscally damaged (i.e. all pins are still intact.) Then it doesn't hurt to try.

well, i superglued (ROFL) all of the RAM chips back on (in their respective places) and i'm gonna try and RMA it with either mwave (where i got it) or directly from leadtek (mfg. of card)... you can't even tell that the ram was ever completely ripped off the PCB now HAHA

so if it lets out the blue smoke when they try and boot it up (probably will short out somewhere), hopefully they'll take it as theri fault that it fried (i know i should be doing this, but it was $320, and i want that $320 back (or atleast $250 from my friend that was planning on buying it)

but im still for what happened last night

ummm ya, this thread started out "ok"... real sad, but i understand wanting to vent ... then the link had some nice pics....and then... i lost all respect for you and this thread!!

this is almost worse than that fool who tried to remove the IHS from his FX57...at least he didnt know he was being a fool, you knew full-well the possible outcome when you glued the sinks on in the first place!

please tell me you were J/K about the RMA.....

I'd forward my sympathies, but after reading this part, I'll just tell ya that I killed about $600 hardware this summer. In this hobby, crap happens, it's just the way it is, and you have to be prepared to deal with it, not skirt responsibility. And you certainly should know better than to post stuff like that here.

What was the pitch on the chips? If the contacts are not damaged you might be able to just stick it in the oven...
