Athlon 64 3000+ Winchester Core

While not the newest Athlon 64 this socket 939 beast is still a great overclocker. My friend and I both bought them in conjunction with the release of the Asus A8N-Sli Deluxe that came out earlier this year. The 90nm cpu process means lower vcore voltage and much less heat.

I upgraded to this processor from a Athlon XP 1700+ Jiucb. The 1700+ was a decent overclocker as well, but required a big noisy fan to keep it cool and actually degraded in performance over time. My overclocking experience with the 3000+ has been wonderful. So far I have pushed the processor from 1.8ghz@200mhz to 2.48ghz@275mhz HTT and this is on the stock fan! CPU temp only increased by 3-4 degrees C so a new heatsink or fan was not required.

The ram I used for this was 512mb Geil Ultra PC4400 @ 7-3-3-2.5 , Newegg just had a great deal on this ram so I bought another 512mb and it should be here by the end of the week.

So as all these new processors come out don't forget about the venerable Winchester Core 3000+, its great price-performance wise and is getting cheaper and cheaper as new processors continue to be released.

I have winchester core 3000+ and as you can see I hit ~2400MHz at stock voltage .
I want to know your cpu temp at full load with the stock AMD cooler. And please tell me your ambient temp.

I'll get back to you on those temp's next week after I have my 2X512mb Dual channel up and running. What ram are you using to get ~2400mhz? I know my friend who i mentioned before used 2X512mb Patriot PC4200 and it was really stable.

I set the ram divader at 1:2 and the freq is 100MHz plus 70 from higher HTT I get 170 MHz . That is 340 DDR . It's not 400 DDR but is fast enough for me .
My ram is Mosel PC3200 2x512MB.

some stable OC'ing

now that i have 1 gig of dual channel on there i overclocked to match the speed of the ram. I set the ram at ddr550 at 7-4-4-2.5 and bumped the HTT up to 275. Ram voltage is at 2.85 and vcore is at 1.45. this gets me to 2.48ghz on my winchester 3000+. I then overclocked my Chaintech 6600gt from 500/1000 (core/mem) to 582/1160 and proceeded to run 3dmark 2001 b330.

I managed a score of 17760 which was quite a bit higher than my previous computers. I'm confident that after I tweak a few other things and maybe add some AS5 to the graphics card I'll manage to score a bit higher. Also, this is on the original bios of my A8N-Sli Deluxe. So i really need to flash the bios to the newest version.

The temperature raised from 33 C to 38 C at idle, with an ambient temp. of 34 C i think. I'm not sure what they were under load, either way these are very low for stock AMD cooling.

Winchesters are not all bad. My brother has a 3000+ winchester running at 2.7Ghz stable. He did lap the stock heatsink and use as5 though.

after a little more tweaking

I went back into the bios after reading the an Asus A8N-Sli Faq and disabled some things like the Silicon SATA controller and made sure it was saving my ram/cpu setting correctly. Then I ran msconfig and disabled a bunch of crap that was starting up with my computer and ran 3dmark 2001 b330 again.

This time i got 21831, a little over 4000 points higher than the first time! This little athlon 64 system i built on the cheap is really coming together
