Windows wakes itself up from Standby and Hibernate!

Well, my Compaq has done this since the day I bought it (may 2005). Everything turns off properly, it hibernates or goes on Standby; then, it just wakes itself back up. Is there anyway I can prevent this annoyance?

is wake on lan enabled?
or better question, does it wake itself up without anything plugged into it?

wake on LAN would be a setting in BIOS. But that wouldn't be the problem if it is still waking on its own even with nothing plugged in. Wake on LAN is only when it gets a packet from some other device, and if the ethernet cable is unplugged then it can't receive packets.
