g0dM@n's Custom Ram Cooler -- 3x60mm design

I got this idea from several people from the forums here, and I never posted pix on it.

*edit* HERE is the thread that got me goin' on this idea. Credit to felinusz...

I am not trying to get credit for the idea, but I just wanted to make a thread about it. Now I can link the people that ask me on how I've pushed 3.7v+ on my ram.

Initially, I had two 60mm TT fans side-by-side, but then I decided to upgrade it to three just for the hell of it.

The fans I used are these here from newegg.

I used fishing line to attach the fans together, and then I spent a lot of time bending and measuring a coat hanger to design them into clips that clip over my ram slots. I then soldered all 3 fans together into parallel, so that they only use one 3-pin plug to be powered. I now have it hooked up to a fan controller, so now I can adjust the fan speeds simultaneously instead of separately when I had the initial 2-fan design.

When I put the clips on and all I then wrapped electric tape around the clips to avoid possible shorting.

Here it is:

Installed:

Thanks for looking... and yes I can pretty much push whatever voltage I want to my ram and keep them cool.

Note: My TwinMOS UTT BH5 ram performs BEST at 3.65v. Anything more makes it more unstable. This was, of course, tested with a DMM. More vdimm with UTT/BH5/CH5 (etc) ram doesn't always mean more FSB, even if you have it cooled correctly. It all depends on the system/settings.

I did it MONTHS ago, but I just was too lazy to post it. People have been asking me what "that thing" is whenever I show them pix of my rig, and so I figured I'd show em what it does and what it's meant for.

wow, all 3 of those fans on 1 3 pin connector. i LIKE the design of it ALOT! im thinking of doing something like this, but have 2x80mm fans sucking hot air from around my redlines up into the exhuast of the powersupply. not sure how effective this would be, but it seems like it might do well. Anyways, A+++ on design and looks.

Honestly... you're better off PUSHING air onto your ram. If you're exhausting air from it, you may be just creating low pressure on the ram; thus, not cooling it to its potential.

well, my plan is xp120 blowing down, 2x80mm blowing up. im thinking it might work, but i think that the 2x80 blowing down might do just as good.

Well, before my watercooling when I was using my XP90, it wasn't a uniform airflow. I saw better performance outa blowing down onto it.

wow, i love the design, by the way, how loud are these on your fan controller? I just want a sense of noise before i try something like this.

Not loud at all... you can hear it if you really pay attention. That's about it. That's when I run it at 12v, which I probably don't even need that much power with 3 fans. I run it at 7v approx. on the fan controller and I really don't hear it at all.

Look at the specs on the newegg site, the one I linked to.

Well, if you're on TCCD ram or something it shouldn't matter. Your ram will be cooled plenty enough.

Nice mod bro..... I'm using almost the same thing but with slightly bigger fans and 2 instead of three..... I find the smaller fans make too much noise for my taste. Now crank up the volts.....

doing the same thing with 2 60mm NMB fans at 5v. Works very nice. I'm not giving my Hynix D5 that much voltage though (3v) but it's still enough to make them uncomfortably warm without cooling.

In all honesty, mine aren't loud at all, especially with the fan controller set to about 7v. I feel like I don't need to push 12v to them... 3 fans at 7v is like more than enough. They are rated like ~22cfm, but for small fans that's a lotta pressure.

How on and out? Ohhhh... your ram is in a good spot for doing that. That's pretty nice. How is it all mounted together, and how does it mount to the computer?

how do you keep that together? I like that design too. What is that black thing keeping the fans together?

do you get dead spots on the mid stick of ram? i made a windtunnel out of plexi and pu 2 60 mm fans one on each end it worked good. you may get better temps of you make a shroud

How can I tell? I mean... I can put whatever voltage and it seems fine.

I said in my description that I used fishing line to tie the fans together. I basically put the fans next to each other and "sewed" them together, and did some tight knots.

Then I cut each wire and soldered them together in PARALLEL, so that they get the same amount of voltage each. Since the rheobus fan controller I have can push out over 1 amp per channel I think it was sufficient for 3 of these fans. These fans are like 0.17A max apiece, so three of them won't pull more than half an amp in parallel (just add amps in parallel).

Note: (for general purposes)
Series Circuits --> Amps remain the same
Parallel Circuits --> Volts remain the same

The black stuff is electric tape (has no part in keeping the fans mounted to one another). I had to coat the sides b/c of the hanger sticking out over there, and also the bottom. Make sure no metal pieces have the ability to come into contact with the motherboard, or any other electronic components for that matter.
