Well, I'm selling this pc to my parents, and deciding to make a new one for me.

The specs on this are:
2.97 ghz p4 non HT
512 dd2 mb ram
128 mb DDR Geforce Fx 5500 Pci card.

So, what, in your opinion, would suffice for me with a budget of 300-500 dollars? I would need a Mobo (PCI-e supported), ram, CPU, tower, and fans and heatsink. I might do some OC'ing with the help of a few friends; but I won't really go all into it. The pc will most likely be running 24/7; as it is the source for my music.

In case you did not want to read my plea:
Please give me a nice setup with a budget of 300-550$; for the following parts:
CPU
Motherboard(PCI-e Supported)
RAM(I'm looking towards 1 gb)
PCI-e Video card(100$-150$)
Fans, heatsink, cooling etc.
Power supply(it will probably be running 24/7)

It is ok if the video card is not over 150$. I just need the ability to keep this pc for a long time; as I am going to college soon.

so you want a motherboard that has AGP and PCI-E? Right now, the only viable one is the Asrock Dual939

http://www.asrock.com/product/product_939Dual-SATA2.htm

you'll have to do a mod to get decent vcore options though.

a 6600 card will satisfy you if an FX5500 did.

3000+ Venice is a good option. most of them overclock well and it is not expensive.

Ram...well...that is a question I will leave untouched for now, until you decide on one place to buy from to avoid multiple shipping costs.

heatsink...best budget one would be the XP-90 retail, or the Arctic Cooling Freezer 64.

Power supply...again, wait until you decide who you wish to order from.

I really apologize, the AGP supported was from my first post of the thread. I edited it again to realize that if I want this pc to last me 2-3 years, I will need PCI-e. So I am looking for a PCIe only mobo.

Man, I love this Fx 5500 ! I can run CSS and HL2 at med-high settings at 1024 x768 ! I am not a videophile; so most things are adequate for me.

I got a configuration here other members might want to help me out on trimming it since the total cost comes to $591 with out shipping.

CPU: AMD 3000+ $146
Motherboard: ASRock Dual SATA II $69
RAM: 1GB OCZ Standard RAM $110
Video Card: x300 128MB $65
Case: Antec SLK3000-B + 120mm Fan $60
Power Supply: Aspire 520 Watt $55

The total is a little over $500 dollars. It's kind of hard to build a computer with that budget, so you might want to save up another hundred or so.

EDIT: Oh, and the ASRock motherboard is a good choice even if you don't have an AGP card, it's future-proof. It even has an processor slot for AMD's upcoming M2. And, as the name implies, it has room for SATA II hard drives. Check out this thread:

Well, I have an extra 400 in my back account; but I was generally hoping to buy the parts with the money my parents give me for my current pc. but if needed, I would spend a little extra

Edit: If i get that mobo I wouldn't have to buy a new video card right away, since, I have an 9600 xt card sitting around. And then I could upgrade the vid card around the holidays.

So Scratch off the tally of a vid card!

if i were you i would save up some more money and get 3800+ x2 and overclock it to 3200+ speeds

Sorry, I don't want to spend 300 + for a cpu. I am planning to oc, but I am a novice, so you must understand, something like this would not do.

Updated list, since you already have a video card.

CPU: AMD 3000+ $146
Motherboard: ASRock Dual SATA II $69
RAM: 1GB OCZ Titanium $144
Video Card: 9600 XT $0
Case: Antec SLK3000-B + 120mm Fan $60
Power Supply: Fortron Bluestorm $90
HSF: Zalman CNPS7700-CU $47

This would be pretty nice for the novice overclocker, the motherboard has nice options but if you want to do some extreme stuff, you'll have to volt mod and what-not. But like I said check out the thread below and you can see it's a pretty nice board.

If your gonna keep the 9600XT I think you should just buy a good Intel mobo that oc's well and keep the rest of the stuff you have.

The Venice would be a little better but it wouldnt be worth the money to buy a whole new system for the upgrade in performance.Just my opinion though.

Well he said he is selling his current rig to his parentals. So if he keeps his current rig then his parents would have to buy a new computer (assuming they need one) and the cost would be more.

New Idea ! (Thanks to Stratcat!)

The specs of the compaq I bought can be found here:
http://configurator.oempcworld.com/result.asp?mn=Presario+SR1426NX&modelid=53325

it says Intel 915, socket 775 I think. So Strat gave me the idea of just buying a new mobo and vid card, which would save me a ton of money!

Here are some Mother boards that are supposedly compliant with my cpu; well the socket 775 ones I think

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...1, 1, 1, 1&description=intel+915&order=priced

I would one that would allow me to use the DDR 2 ram from my current pc.
