Your question is very big, lots of pages can be dedicated to answering it.

So I'll start out small.

BOINC lets you donate computing power to scientific research projects.

On that page lists current projects using the BOINC platform.

So as my computer is going to be sitting here idle while I sit idle sleeping all day, my computer will be doing work for all the projects located in my signature. Helping to further advance science!

Please followup with more questions, its a big topic.

And it works at very low priority, so it does not affect performance of your computer, when you are doing something intensive Boinc does not work, its only taking your spare CPU cycles so you don't even know that its working in the background.

Excellent addition Hamm3r.

So basicly, right now while your reading this messageboard and surfing the internet, your using roughly 1-5% of your PC's power. That extra 95% could be busy helping to solve problems and perform scientific research. As for now its just wasted, so you might as well donate it.

For more information about joining BOINC click the blue BOINC in my sig.
