would there be a reason for getting really no gain from unlocking 4 pipelines on a 6800 128mb card?

Are you sure they unlocked correctly? If you are, then they may be bad pipes. All in all, your scores wont jump dramatically at the stock clocks of that 6800, if your able to overclock it to say, GT speeds, then youll definitely see a more noticeable gain.
