Any Socket A gaming upgrades?

I have a mobile 2500+ right now at 2ghz on air. Nothing that agressive. I want to push my systema little more so I have better results in World of Warcraft and other games. I have an NF-72s rev 2. and wanted to know if there are any worthwhile CPUs available that would give me better results and fit in the board? Or am I pretty much at the point of sticking with everything I have until the next major upgrade?

Thanks

Moblie 2500 should be able to hit 2.3-2.4+ on good air cooling with 1.85v or so. You pretty much have the best socket A clocker there is. Other than swapping it for another mobile if yours is a poor performer. If you can't squeeze anymore out of that chip I would sell it and pick up a mobile 2600+ with barton core.

Good luck!

J.

You pretty much own the pinnacle of the Socket A line. I am having trouble myself accepting that it is time to move on. Socket A is dead and A64 is peeing on its grave.

Yes. Push more volts through it, tweak it some more and you should be able to squeeze about 2.4-2.5GHz out of it. if not sell it and get a Sempron 2800+ and a Gigabyte K8U. You could probably get more for your current system than you'd pay for the upgrade.

Thank you for your input. I am looking forward to pushing my CPU more, I just didn't want it to crap out on me while I am at school. With a liquid chiller on the way and winter around the corner, I shouldn't be that concerned.

My video card is a 256bit Radeon 9800 pro and I'll flash it to XT down the road. The ram is Crucial Platinum 2-2-2-? PC3200.

NF7-S v.2 and the ram is CORSAIR XMS 1GB (2 x 512mb)TWINX1024-3200XLPT - Retail plus an additional stick of 1GB of same brand. I have the FSB at 333 right now, so the ram can take more since it's PC3200.

I guess I was just leary because I didn't know how the aircooling would go with this setup. I have the SP-97 with a vantec stealth on it. I also have a watercooling kit that I haven't even set up yet and a waterchiller on the way.

you should up it from 333 to 400.

do you have the latest abit bios? or you can use one of the other bios's out there.

also, do you have it running dual channel?

to get the dual channel working, you need to take out the gig stick reboot, then reboot again & stick the gig back in. make sure you have the 512's are in the first 2 slots and the gig is in the last slot (furthest from the cpu).

Ok I'll up the FSB and lower the multiplier later this afternoon. Yes the ram is in Dual Channel.

I am unsure if I have the latest Abit bios, but i know I can hit 200fsb with the current one. I thought bios' were "don't change unless something doesn't work"?

Why did you buy a liquid chiller when you could buy an athlon 64?

I didn't buy it. A very generous person is making it for me. I bought the compressor a long time ago before I was hurt, so I figured I might as well get some use out of it.

you are right about the bios, but the last bios D27 from abit, should allow you oc better. also, the abit bios flash, is about as easy as it gets.....no floppy, etc.

let me know if you are interested and i can go through it with you.

I'm in a similar situation with the rig in my signature. I would like to upgrade, but I can't afford an entire new setup with a new video card, so I'm sort of stuck until I can justify spending a lot of money. Christmas is coming, and I would like to spend $100 or so on my system, but I'm not sure if there's any point.

i don't think your gonna gain much by doing anything for $100....i'd just wait until you can do it right

i'd see what you can get out of your xp-m 2600 and ram.

also, see if you can oc your video card, if its not already.

I'm pretty much maxed out on overclocking unless I upgrade my cooling situation. I just dont' seem to have a lot of luck with CPU's. I'm doing 2.43ghz at 1.81v right now, and it's running pretty hot, upwards of 50C under load with a SK7 and tornado. My ram and FSB is at 220. The video card is moderately overclocked.

I do have one option that comes to mind as a decent enough investment. I have a nice heater core from an old chevy that would make a great start for a water cooling system. Investing in a good water pump, and a decent block for the time being could be good. It might yeild a better overclock, and with a block upgrade down the line I could use it on a new system, probably based on an M2 socket.

I just hate that socket A and AGP have hit the end of the line. No more part by part upgrades. It's all or nothin right now. And the current performance gains just don't justify spending that sort of money.

Ok changed to 200 FSB and a 10 multiplier for right now. How will I know when to upthe voltage for the CPU?

I really need to get a better cooling solution for my videocard...

What you need to do is test things out strategically to isolate particular components and find their limits. So to test your CPU, you're going to need to keep the RAM and FSB at settings you know they will not have problems with. The NF7 can run 200 without a problem, and so can your RAM. So let's max out that CPU...

Start by raising your multiplier. 200x11=2200. You should be able to hit that with minimal voltage increase. Once you get running, run some stability tests and move on. You can test more specific speeds by lowering your FSB and raising the multiplier ro dial it in. Have a calulator or pen and paper handy to do the math. Make small steps with voltage and speed, testing along the way.

FYI, my 2500+ hit 2.73 unstable, but 2.6+ solid on air. Thermalright si-97 or slk

that and good video would do ya..

if you want better cooling for your video card, i would suggest buying a vf700cu. the vf sould be 100% compatable with your video ard and should give you the cooling boost you are looking for. you could also get a vga block and then put your video card in your WC loop(if you decide to go that route)

i would also suggest finding out what your processor's top clock speed is. doing that and OCing your video card will give you a very nice performance boost in games. what rennan77 said would be the best way to find out what your processor tops out at. you sould be able to get well over what i'm at (2.3GHz)
