Well.. Trying to emerge openoffice, this is what happens. this is where the error starts (i believe). I don't think my cflags are too extreme (like it says to avoid.. its i686 p4 -o2..)

Is there a way to change the flag in the emerge line? Or does it have to be done via the make.conf?

Is that even the problem?

It's doubtful that cflags are your problem (although posting your emerge info would be informative). Could you post text a little bit higher up than that?

You may also want to try openoffice-bin (and openoffice 2.0 is in unstable).

So.. quick question.. How do you update portage? Cause I just emerge --sync 'd and it said an update to portage is availaible. How do I do that?

And.. how do I install something I've emerged in binary form? I emerge openoffice-bin.. now what?

to update portage do 'emerge portage' as for the binary, if you emerge ooffice-bin and it completed, than you are done. Just ooffice2 and your good.

Well.. ooffice worked fine. So.. I wish I knew that it had that name.. I'm trying to figure out all sorts of combinations of openoffice... oh well : - ]

Well, the system is getting there.. bit by bit.. still gotta figure out this dang mouse thing.

One question. When doing emerge --world, it can mess up the config files, correct? I don't believe I have used any of them.. where do you find those files? The only program I've actually made changes in is Gaim.. which probably won't need to be updated anyways.. but if so, where do I find that config file? Is there even one?

It won't automatically overwrite the config files. It will ask you if you want to and show you differences between the new/old config files. Also, do you mean 'emerge -u world'? Because I'm not sure what an emerge --world would do exactly other than just remerge everything in your world file which I doubt you need to do.

Yeah I meant emerge --update world.. probably doesn't help that my mind is melting while I'm doing all this ;- ]

Most program's user-specific config data is stored in your home directory and won't get clobbered when updating things. System wide data is stored in /etc and is protected by config-protect. When an install needs to update config files, it will tell you after the mere and you can run etc-update to replace the old file, interactively merge the two, or delete the new file.

All sorts of information like this is in the gentoo handbook:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/index.xml

Check out the "working with portage section" in particular. Manuals are wonderful things.

Man.. these past two weeks I've been terrible at reading directions.. Of course thats the week I decided to install Gentoo.. good timing huh?

So I read through the FIRST little piece about using portage.. not noticing the ENTIRE section about portage like a half page below it.. smooth.. no wonder some of that stuff wasn't in that first one ;- ]

a little tip on seeing what prgrams are named, type the first couple letters and hit tab a couple times. it'll spit out all the programs with those starting letters. For instance to see what all is included in open office type oo and hit tab a few times and it'll pop up all the module names for open office.
