pci express question

This is a dumb question, but I have never used the pci expresses, only agp's and old pci cards. Anyway, do they not require power like some of the later agp's? Reason I ask is I purchased a evga 6800, and it has no molex for power.

Advantages of PCI-E is that it pumps out 75W of power compared to the little amount AGP had in comparison which did need the power connector.

Guess one down side to this is if its running close to spec, you'll be limited on the OC you could get out of the card, expecially if you volt mod it.

Thanks for the quick response. I should be good then since I'm not oc'ing.

Higher-end cards like the GTX's do require power, but instead of a molex, they use a special 6-pin plug. Most PCIe cards with these plugs come with molex adapters, but PSUs that are marketed as "SLI-ready" have two of them already. Just for future reference

That's why I was asking. My psu has the plug for pci, but it confused me when the graphic card itself had no molex connector. As long as it runs fine I'm ok with that, less wires hanging in the way .

B'ah!!

Dang card didn't work after getting installed. Actually the box it came in from Newegg looked liked it was kicked around the block a few times. Maybe that's why UPS rang my doorbell once and drove off.

Oh well, I called the egg and going to RMA it back tomorrow for a refund. Now I'm going to decide on another, I may go ahead and get a 7800, dont know.

Another case of UPS causing issues for the customer.

I would go with a 7800gt if i were you... IMO its worth the extra cost over the 6800gt.

Yeah I was thinking of doing so. Is the EVGA 7800gt still a good choice?

Aren't all the newer nVidia boards from the manufacturers the same? What should matter is price, warranty (ha, we're overclockers ), and bundle/lack of bundle. I don't recall hearing any non-reference boards released yet, other than with PCB color changes.
