opteron overclocking

ive heard somewhere that the a64 platform as a whole is really not effected by memory bandwidth. if that is the case then would there be anything wrong with running the ram @ 200 mhz with 2/2/2/x timings and using a multiplier?

for example for an opteron running at 3ghz with 300 htt (10x) i would use a 2/3 mutplier so the ram would remain at 200 mhz. would that work?

In most cases it should work. But sometimes value rams will not comply to dividers if running CPU @ higher FSB, even if the ram stays within its spec.
It would be a good idea to find a ram reasonably priced and can at least give you ~230mhz. This way you have more flexibility when overclocking CPU and using dividers. An overclockable ram will also help when the divider is an odd ratio (ex: CPU/11= 9/11*280fsb=229mhz for ram)

If his ram is running at 2-2-2-x @ 200MHz, i highly doubt it will be "Value Ram". It will have overclocking headroom.

I've tried that with my ram, but I get better performance by loosening the timings a bit and clocking it higher. I actually get maximum performance at 2.5-3-3-6 at 254MHz using a 11:12 divider, but my board can't get that setting as rock stable as I would like. (It fails Prime after 13 hours)
