Opteron Questions

I am looking into building a new systems after I pay off my car and i almost have so I have been looking into some stuff to buy and an opty is the first thing on my list and my biggest questions is what does the unit number really mean? How willi know if i get a good one because i hear all thist talk about a 50GYE or something like that and i am completely lost. I want to know what they mean and if someone could tell me I would be very grateful.

Thanks ~ Penixor

The stepping is an indication of when it was made and where. I know in the past, some chips were made in germany, and others in like.. Malasia. If they are made in germany, generally they were better quality and OCed better. Thats what they are talking about. Some of us, mostly me , don't mind what stepping we get. I never check. Ever.

If you'll do a search for Opteron in this section, and start looking through the threads about it by date, you will find more information than you need. As Cheator said, the stepping code indicates when and where the CPU was made, and what batch it came from. Some steppings will usually do better on average than other steppings. Like I said, a simple search will find you much more information about Opteron stepping codes and the average performance of each.

Some people tell you the code. Not many do.
