I'm wondering whether I will be able to just pop in a new X2 processor into my current setup, or whether I will need to reinstall windows?

There is no need to reinstall Windows. It is recommended to clear the cmos, but you can even get away without doing that. Good luck with it.

You may have update the bios depending on what X2 you install... See Asus CPU support for more info.
