Wow, I scored BIG :)

I was headed home yesterday and noticed a garage sale going on 4 houses down from me. I dont usually stop at garage sales, but something seemed to be calling me.

Anyway, long story short - there is a decent LOOKING machine sitting amongst all the junk, and it's marked at $50. So I asked if I could open it up and look at the guts of the system... NO. Can you start it up so I can make sure it runs? NO. Okay, I'll take it for $50, but if it doesnt work when I get to my house 4 doors down, I want my $$ back. OK? Good.

So I get home and the system is FRIEKING SWEET. 3ghz/512/800 SL6WK P4, Asus p4c800-e, 1gb crucial pc3200, 120gb SATA maxtor, 150gb SATA seagate, 2 Plextor DVD burners, Antec Sonota case, EVERYTHING cooling is Zalman, legal copy of XP Pro, all disks and everything - NICE.

Anyway, my question is: It also has an nVidia Quadro FX1000 in there. I have no idea what this thing is all about. What is it worth? I guess it's supposed to be a decent card? Give me some feedback on it, please. I'm excited.

its worth quite abit, I would suggest you find a serial number and contact your local police department, it could be stolen. Thats the sort of machine you dont find being sold unless they have no idea what its worth, and a crook may not care to find out.

If it was stolen, do you think they would prop it outside for a garage sale at their house?

Im not saying it is for sure, but you can get in all sorts of trouble for accepting stolen merch... This is to protect you, some times when the deal is too good to be true, it is, some times its just a good deal, i hope its the later, but i would cover my ass first.

all those parts alone would be worth way more than $50. i think if someone knew what they were doing when putting those parts together they wouldnt sell all of it for $50. so either something is really wrong with it and it doesnt work or its stolen.

I asked - it was an older lady that told me her son had built the machine back in 2003. He ended up building another and giving this one to her in 2004 and she sold it in the garage sale becuase it would "just turn off" when she was working on it. I'm not really worried about it being stolen...

Turns out that the thing is FULL of dust and dirt. I ripped it all down, cleaned everything and put it back together. I've experienced the restart twice since I've had it running and cant pin it on anything in particular.

Any ideas on how I should start tracing the problem out?

Bummer And where would I find a serial number to check on this thing? I'll do it now if I can find the SN.

Well sounds like your in the clear then, I would suspect either the heatsink mounting, or power supply for random reboots like that. If you can burn a Memtest86+ boot disk and also test the memory, who knows there may be a bad stick and once you pull it out, all will be good.

dont you feel a little guilty about ripping that old lady off? oh well. congrats anyway on an insane deal. you should start swapping parts out with working ones if you want to trace the problem. this is probably the best way to find it.

5800's are probably the best DX8 card ever made. My 5800nu would clock well over ultra speeds with stock cooling. I kinda like the 5800 for all the press it got. Quite the infamous card...

still, i would feel a little guilty if i knew something was worth more than what i paid for, especially hundreds more. and i would feel particularly bad if it was an old person i was buying from. but enough ranting, enjoy your new system.

Wow, nice. That thing sounds awesome... *drools* And after looking at newegg a bit, it seems that all the Quadro FX's are DX9 with a max resolution of...

3840x2400!! *drools even more* I didn't even know they made resolutions that high!
