Hi, everyone.
First, I thought I'd give all my friends an update on how things are going.
1) I just got my second paper accepted for publication; a short note on curvature discretizations will be appearing in the Journal of Computational Physics sometime early next year. So, yay!! I'm working on writing another paper on cancer modeling that we'll probably submit to a mathematical biology journal in January.
2) I'm flying to Palo Alto, CA to give my first cancer talk. My advisor was unable to make it to the talk, so he's letting me to go this workshop for a week. It's going to be a week of discussions and collaboration with clinicians, scientists, and other mathematicians, so I'm very excited. (The fact that air fare and hotel are covered isn't too shabby, either.) I'm pretty nervous, too.
3) I'm planning on formally advancing to Ph.D. candidacy in January 2006. This should be pretty good, since I'm in the nice place where I'll be able to cite three of my own papers for it. At that point, I'll be a.b.d. and on the home stretch.
4) I'm going to be accelerating my Ph.D. research in the next year, with the hope to finish by May 2007. I'm still hoping to talk my advisor into December 2006, since I really want to graduate as early as I can. I'm itching to move on with my life, get a job/house/kids, etc.
This means that I'm entering into a very busy year in my life. Regretfully, I don't have the time to properly moderate anymore, at least for the moment. Please consider me "on sabbatical". I can't guarantee that I'll respond to PM's properly or browse/moderate frequently with my current commitments, and so it's the only right thing to do.
I'm going to turn PM's off so that none get lost. If anybody needs to contact me, please just post here, and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. I'm sorry that I need to do this, but I just can't afford to split my time in a way that neither the moderating nor my Ph.D. work gets proper attention.
I'll try to log on and post from time to time to let you know how things are going, but I'm mostly going to be away.
It's been a pleasure being a member here, starting as a lurker, then a registered member, then a senior, and more recently as a moderator. The forums have been such a part of my life that my wife recognizes the site as a glance, and more importantly, I've come to regard you all as my friends. I'll look forward for me return down the road, when I'm an Dr. Evil Scientist.
All the best wishes for the continued success of the forums!! -- Paul
