Interview with a Maple Leaf

So I'm flipping through the channels and I come to a channel showing a Toronto Raptors (basketball for those who don't know) game and during a lul in the action one of the roving reporters for the network was talking with a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs (hockey for those who don't know) who just happened to be in the stands watching the basketball game. The reporter was asking about how the hockey season was going for the Leafs and such but the interesting thing was not what the player had to say, it was what he chose to wear. Throughout the whole 2 minutes that he was being interviewed no one made any effort to disguise the fact that his shirt had that familiar face of everyone's favorite internet soldier, smiling and holding his tin cup with the caption of: How about a nice warm cup of shut the futz up! surrounding him.

This guy (this is the original version, the more common one has different text, roughly matching what I posted above)

I think we're all on the same page now.

Hmm, interesting. I thought that the Maple Leafs were better behaved But at least you get NHLers on TV every once in a while.

(Aside: Don't Canadians have stronger media-decency laws than the US? Or is that just an illusion?)

It's (tv regulations) become a completely random thing now. I've seen the word futz bleeped out (or muted or replaced with something else) in one sentence spoken by "character X" in a tv show and then that same character says it again in the very next sentence and they don't do anything to cover it up. I'm not complaining about the Leaf's shirt or decency laws, I just thought it was funny that no one apparently realized what he was wearing. That and I didn't know you could get that image on a t-shirt.

Well, come to think of it, many of the common internet pics would make good shirts. I would be surprised if nobody had a cafepress store that sold the things.

As far as broadcast decency standards, they are pretty random down here as well. Some whole shows get a pass on them as long as they say "please don't say that" right after someone drops the f-bomb. Other shows that fail to pass the law enforcment popularity contest get stinking huge fines for making jokes about intestinal gas.

I know, but I figured if I didn't speak up now (well, then) that someone would eventually post it.

Party pooper.

The Daily Show featured a hilarious segment about the USFCC, which is responsible for abridging the freedom of speech and of the press protecting the public interests on the airways. Reccomended viewing, as are most other things that Jon Stewart does.

It's just interesting to me how we regard the public airways. It seems different in Canada. Canadians have less of a problem with truth, I think.

O Canada! (I grew up just across the border from Vancouver <3 )
