im considering moving the hard drives outside of my server, and using long sata cables to connect them.
purpose being to buffer their noise better and have more room inside the server.
ive had ideas of everything from suspending them inside a large cardboard box with bungee cord to making a tower of notched 2x4's .
goals:
*make the vibration not turn into noise
*have room for up to 30 hard drives
*have something thats not going to be TOO difficult to move when it comes time
*have it not be a dead hard drive waiting to happen
*still be able to run sata cables to the server. sata/ ata drives+sata adapters.
i saw some 40" sata cables, which gives a good amount of space to work with.
i do have animals, so id need to keep it so that they could not directly touch them. (dont need ESD'd hard drives)
i have some decent woodworking skills, all the tools i could possibly need (well, enough of them anyway...no plasma cutter yet) lots of materials + access to more, and a few days off after christmas.
ideas wanted. scans, descriptions, mspaint drawings, even QOOLE screenshots.
one last thing: i do have two old full tower AT cases, it woudlnt take much to mod one into a huge hard drive storage unit, but creative ideas to reduce/remove noise are still needed.
i have a post in cooling requesting silent fans, of which a couple could be used creatively to cool these drives.
