Ping Question

I'm new to this, but i was wondering what the average ping should be? (i.e.yahoo.com),(google.com)
Like (30-80) ave
(5-29) good
(80-above) bad

Something along these lines.

I do know that it will differ depending on ISP, bandwidth, distance to servers, and such.
i just want a ball park.
Thanks

anything over 120 could be considered Bad......
when pinging those types of sites you have to consider traffic....

Well the real question that I have is. Should I be satisfied with a 60's ping (on average)? To these sites or should I complain. Basically Am I getting what I paid for? (1m/256 in a rural area)
Thanks Again

do a "tracert google.com" and look which router on the way is the problem first, if you think you should have a lower ping,

You cant complain based on Ping / download speed at all really., your ISP speeds are ONLY a "maximum" speed you can get - they dont garuntee you will get 1mb down from every site - they cant it is impossible

NO ISP can say "you are garunteed 1mb / 256kb up down from anywhere you visit / download"

that is simply a "MAXIMUM" speed you might hit, nothing more.

read your agreement, and other fine print, - once the internet conneciton leaves your ISP's servers - they have no control over it.

lets says someone was hosting a web site on a 56k modem - how can your ISP garuntee you a 1mb down on that site....

if you complain your ISP will come over, test the line for feedback - it will be with in their limits for operation and they will leave.

understood... but SHOULD i expect better service. (i.e. change ISP's or Stay with this one). tracert shows a 48ping to there router. is this average, good, or bad. All i am asking is should i look for improvement or is this about average service.
Thanks

48ms to the first hop is bad, unless they do interleaving (I'm assuming DSL). E.g. my provider does it so I can never get below 50ms pings. Interleaving is a form of error correction on the wire, so it could be that you're to far away from the DSLAM to work otherwise. If that's so, then no other DSL will be faster. Howeve some ISPs do the interleaving always, no matter if needed or not.

Is there any way to test this to see if the problem is on my side?

Do you hav any friends on the service that could try it out to see wht thy get

with DSL in canada you had to be 3.5km within a phone center to get DSL so perhaps you are just with in a good distance.

please know that as of winter 2004, google does not allow you to ping it. Hense why we get time outs and high latency when we ping it. Use yahoo to ping.
