MySpace: Your Thoughts?

My first thought was that it was going to be a fad that passed quickly, but 46 million people seemed to have proved me wrong...I used to be "anti-MySpace" because all I would hear at school was "did you see that comment I posted last night on your MySpace?!?"...even my PHYSICS TEACHER has a myspace account! I hear the term "MySpace wh*** quite often, and its sad to see people obsessing over their SOCIAL NETWORKING profile instead of going out and being social. Business Week magazine has an excellent article on MySpace here that mentions problems like hyperdistractability and stalkers. Its not hard for a 14 year old girl to post all of her contact info online only to be stalked by some 60 year old pervert...

However, despite all of this, I see some very good aspects to MySpace as well: it does provide an excellent way to meet new friends or strengthen bonds with old ones. Its music features are amazing...anyone in a band can put their songs up for free to be seen by the entire internet. Hawthorn Heights is a great example of this: with no radio play and barely any advertising, they've become one of the biggest bands in the emo/screamo/hardcore scene, with much of their popularity due to MySpace.

So do the benefits outweigh the risks? I don't know...

Your thoughts?

Everyone always tells me "Check out my MySpace", and I'm like "OK, Dude". I guess it just doesn't do anything for me. I'd rather surf here, and gain some form of knowledge (or any technical forum) opposed to looking at people's stupid My Space stuff, and wasting minutes that will never come back

But then again, I am more of a Hyper-Spastic Introvert... I'd rather do my B.S. socializing at Band Practice, or at Gigs - when I'm "In my element" (on the drums ).

Quick question:

Is "my space" that service that is only open to those who have a student ID at some school? With all the blogging services out there today, I can't keep track of what is what.

Should it be the case that it is what I am thinking of, it is fairly useless as you would only have the ability to use it for the few years that you are in secondary school. After that, you would have to start a new service, if only for the reason that your current service is stupid.

Nope. Open to any Joe Blow that wants to say "I have my own webpage - Check it out. I'm so cool. Look - that is me and this girl I met last year. Hey, here is a graphic I made last week. Doesn't it rock?"

It certainly has a strong following, but so does Gaming (I don't game either)... It just doesn't make me "tingle" like it does for others (I'm far from a teenager FWIW)...

bah, i find myspace, and blogs the most pointless thing on the net.

more pointless than Pron!

i just find it a complete waste of space. wate of time, and a waste of my time to visit someone's my space page, when i know the person in real life.

friend: " hey, go check out my webpage on myspace!"

Me: "Why? i already know everything about you, i know what pictures you will put up, and i can probably guess what you will say on the page. and i can guess with a 95% accuracy of what song you will put up on the site..."

pointless, waste of time, waste of space...bah.

its funny cause all the people i know that make fun of geeks and nerds end up having my space accounts.

i'm not into blogging, etc. i use the net for information. people use it to date supposedly?

i don't like it and i don't date girls with myspace accounts, if they have one it gets annihilated.

I find it amusing. It has some strong points, such as keeping in touch with people. It also has some weak points, such as it's users (). Too many people want a page that looks "cool"...and don't care about the fact that it's basically unreadable.

Take mine for instance. It's annoying and conceited, I know it, and that was what I was going for. It's basically a joke for me.

I still mostly find people that are there because it's cool rather than because it's something useful. But that's their choice, and if they're having fun then more power to them. Not like I can say much with the page I have.

I have one so I can meet my old friends. I've changed and people can see that. Myspace just helps get in touch with them. But I visit it like once every other day, I didn't fix up my page. It's the myspace '****w hores*s' that are wacky.

But I find a lot of people are anti-myspace just becuase it's popular. That just seems rediculous.

So what? Of course stuff like that's going to happen, shock news or whatever doesn't mean anything.

Yes, some kid shot himself and posted it on a website, I'm sure he's the first person to think of something like that.

Anyways, I'm not even exactly sure how the whole networking thing goes. I don't have any friends so I don't have a myspace. How much bandwidth/server space do you get?

Myspace is alright. I use it to keep track of friends in RL that's overseas. I just hate how some people have like 500 friends and think they're the bomb.

My 26 year old friend found one of his previous best friends from school on myspace about 8 months ago and they are now hanging out; Myspace does have it's good sides.

I think it is useless. I would rather all of these people just make an actual website and customize it to their liking rather than doing the same thing over and over again. But, you know what is even more pointless than myspace? Discussing something as pointless as myspace.

Never used Myspace, but I do have a blog on my own domain. Mainly used to let friends and family who live in other parts of the country know what Ive been up to.

I have a Myspace account, but some things really tick me off, i.e. Music in peoples blogs. I really don't want to be playing my Metal out really loud then some idiot puts a Britney Spears video/song in his/her/it's profile. Atleast they could do is just leave it on pause, if i want to listen to it, i'll click play. In which case if its Britney Spears i won't ever play! :P

Yah, I was thinking of facebook last night. Anyway, it seems to be more or less the same thing as face book (and a bunch of other similar services). Basically, a way to have a personal web space without going to the trouble of setting up a proper web site.

I set one up this morning and if anyone wants, they can feel free to add me to thier facebook page (or whatever other site). Here is the link:
