We need a place to talk about politics.

There are waaaaay too many smart people here to just leave out an interesting topic of discussion. I LOVE hearing what all these intelligent folks have to say on certain issues... I find it fun actually 'discussing' things.

I know it's probably been done in the past with little luck, but we should have another go. Solely, an example, [H] has a 'genmay' section that you pay $5 for membership. At first site and cover value, I though how dumb is that. Thinking about it a little more... with a small $5 fee, you can weed out a lot of the flamers/non-discussers. People aren't going to waste time and $5 just to throw in a classic 'OMFG BUSH IS TEH SUX!!!111'... I think it would weed those out nicely.

I think a small fee for entry, and an agreement stating you can be terminated from it at any time would be great.

Sure, you say just do it in AIM... wheres the fun in that?! It's 10000 times better to post up something, and get 10 different views on the topic.

Again, of the people I talk to, most of the intelligent ones are actually on this forum, it's just a shame we can't share more views other than how bad nVidia owns ATi...

I vote NO. Politics and Religion should be off limits on this forum. There are other places to join in on topics like those. Just my opinion.

Well this forum is entilted OCForums, it's not as if we're overclocking how Bush runs the country or something of that matter. If there's a need for discussion on other subjects/topics, there's always other forums for that.

I personally want to start a site just for religious and political debates, so all the people who cant debate at their primary forum, have a place to. and im sure people would join just to debate with all the other people, and could get some good discussions goin there.

When I and/or others figure out a way to make it work, we will get it. Don't hold your breath though, I have been on this for probably 2 to 2 and a half years. The main crux is how to do it in such a way that it is not a lot of work. When this was allowed, I was probably moderating the section at least 5 or 6 hours a day at the least in the months before it was pulled. I didn't mind it, but it wasn't fun either at all. And all that time I was putting in, plus the time of a couple of other mods (who were spending above average amounts of time on the section I would imagine as well) wasn't enough to keep everything in line (and believe me, the number of PMs, edits, warnings, etc. I was sending out was quite large). So to sum it up, I don't mind working hard in the section, but it has to be something where if I am not around for 12 hours or even 36 hours (and maybe there aren't any mods of the section for that time) that it doesn't turn into a disaster. In any forum we get a few errant threads and/or posts that can be handled by any of the mods, but the way debates was, it needed a constant and heavy presence of people (mostly mods and seniors, though there were quite a few very, very helpful members at the time as well) to keep things in line.

Quick addition. And even if I/others figure out how to do it, it doesn't mean we will get it either. But a workable solution will go a long towards getting it .

Other addition. Payment for access will not be an option. Simply denying access to the forum for troublesome users will not be an option in and of itself. Member rank beyond the requirements to post in GD will not be an option either (such as all 1000 post users get to post politics, senior members, whatever).

If you have any ideas for such a section, you could post it in this thread or PM it to me. Of course, once you figure out a way for it to work, then you have to show how and why it would benefit the forums as well.

House: This is the only way! Sometimes solutions are NP complete and there's nothing anyone can do about it! Foreman, sneak into the physics department and reroute their servers to ours, we need the extra processors if we don't want this equation to go quadratic on us. Chase, patch the memory leak and install Matlab 9.3.
Chase: Shouldn't we be using Mathematica for potentially asymptotic functions?
House: When I want your opinion, I'll do an affine transformation to get it. I'm off to see Cuddy. Those parabolic eigenvalues of hers must be good for something.

Idea is good. Implementation is tricky.

Read Williams post cos it more or less sums up my thoughts :>

I figured that was the main case against the idea. Wouldn't you love to be able to talk with people as intelligent as those on this forum about current issues? Not even just politics.

I just wish there was a way to have this option painlessly... theres a lot of knowledge here, not just about computers too.

with a forum like this, 1. its open to all ages (the more or less g rating) , 2. all levels of intelligence (not that im attributing any of that to age) , and 3. all political views (so long as they are kept out of the forum, so far.)

the reason politics are excluded, more or less is because #1. and #2. have worked fairly well (mostly) together for the overclocking discussions that happen here. its when you add in the third, i suspect, that the disadvantages of the other two become harshly apparent. you might have to clamp down one and two, thus trading overclocking for politics, and im not surprised things have stayed this way so far.

Meh, I have a few questions I'd like to ask here and there, but honestly, talking about politics and religion just...... well, not very fun. Give it like a week and you just get so tired of it.

no one talks about laptop overclocking in the cooling section or pentium 3 cpu's in the AMD section, we're all grown gals and guys, I think if there is a seperate section people would be able to keep it in that section

It's not a matter of keeping it in a section. It has to do with rules, flaming, that sort of thing. It would have to stay G rated. It's a hefty job to put upon the mod's.

Of course I'd like to see a section like this, but it's also 100% understandable why you wouldn't have this section.

Perhaps if we ever start www.overclockersandpoliticaldiscussions.com. Until then, I doubt it.

We're here to overclock computers; we have IMHO far too many "extra" forums as it is.

Guess that's where I stand on the whole thing.

Well, it would be nice if we could figure out how to overclock our politicians so we could get more substance from them and less BS. I think we should try more voltage!

Despite being fairly politcally active the only politics I really care to see here is why hasn't Intel started shipping Cedarmill yet and is your computer faster than mine?

Seriously politics are screwed becuase they don't very easily let the people who want to rock the boat in otherwise politics would be the most mindnumbingly boring topic on the planet next to chem1.

Sections don't cause problems, people do. like I said if everyone can stay mature, it wouldn't be a problem

Yeah, thats basically my position as well.. would it be nice to have ? sure, will i hold my breath untill it happens, or actively do anything to help push this idea forward ? probably not.
