F@H Spotlight #11

This is the 11th in the series of T32 Spotlights! I'll continue to interview members when given a chance. The interviews will appear in a spotlight every now and then as long as the nominations keep coming in! For how to go about nominating a fellow folder, please go to THIS THREAD. To see the ever growing list of who has been interviewed and the expected date of the next spotlight, please go to THIS THREAD.

Hmm... Sometimes, being too simple can be a bad thing (especially when I try to write an intro for ya!). Today, this young man claims he is simple, yet for someone is into the complexities of Politics, how simple can he really be? Let's give it up and have a warm hand for one of the Bluesiest Seniors around....

PLOAF

When did you join the Team?
This was a little surprising since I haven't really been very active with team activities, other than hosting the site(I'm still not sure that it's safe to put back online), or with the forums. But I joined in June 2001.

What is your EOC (extremeoverclockers) stats link?

Don't know. It's flat. I stopped folding for myself a while ago and now do it anonymously, sort of.

If there was something recent that you did that you wanted your fellow teammembers to know about, what would it be?

I can't really think of anything recent.

So where do ya happen to live at?

I live in NE Ohio near the PA border in a town called Struthers.

How did you initially hear about F@H?
I started doing SETI at another site and loved the concept. While searching for more information on distributed computing and cluster computing I discovered Folding@Home. It seemed like a worthy effort to spend CPU cycles on. I chose overclockers.com because of the help that I had received here. Folding@Home wasn't quite the same then as it is now. It really didn't work very well, they tossed out the initial FAH1 stats and started all over. The new client was awful. Any problems, if there are any, they may have now are nothing compared to then. Client works fine for me.

After starting, why do you continue to Fold?
Why not?
Like I said.... again with that simplicity stuff. Simple answers, simple minds I've always heard.

What do you do for a living?
I repair and install residential water treatment equipment.

What do you do for fun?
Plenty of things. Date, chat, cook, hang out with family and friends, engage in political debate. I'm not too complex.

Is there anything special you do in your spare time that you really enjoy?
I love to cook and make wine and share it with people. Sometimes it's good and sometimes it's a disaster

Time to spill your guts. What are the stats of your main folding rig?
Why is it your fave? What all do you use the rig for?
I only have one folding rig, my main system. I don't know the stats because I don't care about that anymore, but it's a dual 1.4 opteron so you could probably guess at its performance. I don't use my laptop because, well, it's a G4 powerbook and I don't think it's made to work under constant strain like that.

Do you have a Borg-Farm? If so, how many computers, and what are they?
I did this at one time with the work computers. It never worked out because they used dialup and weren't very powerful. I had a personal farm that I built. I think at one time I had 14 cpus working, but that was a couple of years ago. Closest I had to anything respectable was Foldzilla , running Overfoldix, a Linux distro that David put together. It was a 5cpu system. The electric bill was murder so I eventually shut it all down and just went back to systems that I was actually using for something.

What are your future goals? What do you most want to accomplish with
your life?
I want to find a woman that can tolerate me for more than a few months and retire on a beach.
Don't we all? You'll find the right lady someday.

If there is something you want to tell the team, then spill your guts! What have I missed in my questions that could help the team learn more about you and who you are?
Win. Like I said, I'm pretty simple. If anything I would say that I know a few people with alzheimers and it's really good to tell those caring for them that there are thousands upon thousands of people out there donating their computers to aid in research that could possibly lead to an effective treatment. It's too late for the ones that I know. They are too far gone, but it's great that so many people care.

Again, major thanks to Ploaf for putting up with me, and dude, if yer out there, here is your 15 minutes!

Sweet! He is far too honest though. He was at least partially responsible for a huge growth in our team in the beggining to late 2002. In fact he and a few of the motely crew got me into it after helping me with some issues on my first O/C project. He is good people and Imhonored to have met him.

Hey Guys. Nice to see everyone and also that things are going strong here and I even saw a thread where the team started outpacing OCAU, at least for now.

For AlabamaCajun - this is foldzilla - That brought me up to 14 cpus which also included a dual xp system, a p3 laptop (which died prematurely), a few systems that were nailed to a basement wall and Sampson, the #octeams irc bot and file server who has found new life in somebody else's home. it's hard to believe that was 3 years ago.

Hey walaka7. (He's kidding. I paid him to say nice things.)

Fold On and have one on me

Ah man that is/was freaking sweet fzzzt *~;.....

Ok got another keyboard. Where is Foldzilla? (what a name )
BTW: Enjoyed the travel back in time there to see that, Thanks.

Don't know if you were in here before XMas but this is what I cobbled together http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=427481 for a little farm. Still working to get them to boot headless and diskless. I have 3 layers about ready to go.

Looks like a nice start.
Foldzilla is gone now. I gave most of the parts away. The electric bill became unaffordable, coinciding with a temporary drop in income.

If I were going to do it again I would do it this way > http://overclockix.octeams.com/How_t...lding_Farm.htm

the foldzilla setup used to lose everything when the power went down, which is sort of rare, although it happened a few times while I was running it. Go figure. power hasn't went out here in like a year now with nothing running. well- main sys is on a UPS.

Ahhh!

Catching up on these interviews and must chastise myself for not giving Props earlier. Ploaf was the guy that helped me with all my early questions no matter how stupid. If it wasn't for him I would have mostly likely left F@H during all its growing pains.
My personal Thanks to you Mr Pickle!
Also Thanks to TH and LS for this interview series. Good Stuff it is!
