Is there a market for lapped heatsinks?

So I had an idea but I wanted some advice on it. I was thinking of buying some heatsinks (xp-90 and/or xp-120) and lapping them to a mirror finish (to the copper layer).

Do you guys think they would sell on ebay? It'd probably cost me anywhere from $30-35 for an xp-90 with sandpaper. Do you think they'd sell for much more than that?

I got the idea from a friend who paid me $15 to lap his heatsink. I searched ebay but didn't see anything really close to what I'm thinking.

Not sure if there is much of a market for it, but it'll only cost you $30-$35 to find out. I suggest you get one and lap it, then sell it on ebay and see if there are many bids and what price it sells for. Goodluck with it

Hopefully you have a lot of time on your hands...not to mention a precision ground granite surface and the tools to prove that the surface is flat, not just shiny.

Personally, I dont think there is a market for heatsinks which people may consider to be altered and possibly voiding any warranty that might apply. Also consider that your trying to sell something as a specialty item, but lapping kits can be bought for less than a Starbucks latte.Try it and see, but you might find that you wont make enough money to even cover the eBay charges to sell the lapped heatsinks. Also, theres a debate over whether lapping the heatsinks is even beneficial.Personally, I dont like having heatsinks that are lapped, but others do.Try it and see.Good luck with that if you try it.

^^ i kind of agree about the lapping. i haven't tried a before and after temp comparison, but i think a bit more surface area [rougher] and some grease squeezed in would work better.

wouldnt be worth the time for the 15 bucks unless you could get it done in about 10 minutes.

for example, i dont work for less then 50 bucks an hour. and by work, i mean manual labor. you want something done, minimum 50 bucks or ill find something else to do. luckily, i run my own company and make my own hours... currently making 65/hour.

so no, i wouldnt waste my time.

it might help it sell for the price you got it for but no more.

It's too labour intensive. Plus the market is soo small...you try to convince Joe Sixpack that a lapped heatsink is better then one from the factory.

Was thinking the same. It wouldn't be worth it, since you'de need to sell that lapped XP90C for $100 for it to be worth it. Good luck with that.

If your making $65/hour why are you even wasting your time posting on these forums?

Seriously that post just seemed like an excuse to brag about something that may or may not be true.

Not too hard to lap it yourself, buying a simple kit is about $10 or less with the glass included and all. I don't think there would be too many people buying a pre-lapped heatsink off ebay, their not too sure on how much of an improvement it'll show and you can't really prove that either.

Like some of the others I'm not sure if the profit would be worth your time. But as for if it would sell, people have paid megabucks for burnt toast and the likes. Try one and let us know.

the only way i would try it is if i had access to a surface grinder and surface guages and precision granite surfaces, and the time to do all the work and prove theres less than like .0002 inch per inch flatness, with a mirror finish.

and i dont enjoy operating the grinders all that much to make it worth my time. i dont think just being shiny would cut it.

If theres a market, it would not be very beneficial to you... The time it takes to properly lap a heatsink flat, not just to a mirror finish, is considerable. Consider the amount you might be able to sell them for, and the number of people who might be interested in buying them... And you'll see that your really doing some hard work for peanuts.

To make it economically worthwhile, you'd need to figure out how to automate it mechanically.

locally and small scale.. maybe. Selling them online adds costs which just arent worth it, since it would be a minimum profit job anyway. $15 sounds pretty good both ways for a lap job.. doesnt sound so great if they have to pay $15+ shipping. You could give them free shipping but at the same time it doesnt sound so great if you are getting basically $15 - shipping cost - sandpaper cost. Which is at least $5.. probably slightly more.

cause i make my own hours, and i like computers. im only a real estate agent, nothing special. but i am my own LLC.

and the amount of commission/number of hours worked per deal = good $$

i dont do anything else when im not working, thats why its such a high figure. not bragging, anyone can be a real estate agent. its not hard(to get a license)
