Is Opteron 165 better than Presler 920 for Video Encoding?

I will be upgrading soon and I'm trying to decided on a CPU. I plan to overclock as much as I can safely using air cooling. I don't game very much, but I do video encoding and editing and use video FX software. I also tend to have lots of apps and browser windows open all of the time.So I was wondering if anyone has any 1st hand experience or point me to any relevant benchmarks.

Thanks

At stock speeds there will be no much diference between the two, but when you oc, then it all depends how much you overclock. People with opteron165 can overclock from 2.4 to 2.7ghz on air, and that is from 30-50% overclock on air.
920 overclock with high end air from 3.7 to around 4.1 ghz probably, that is from 30-45% overclock from air, yet this is high end air with a good mobo and good psu.

Based on that, a X2 will be cheaper to buy and a better buy.

Can you name programs and codecs you use for encoding, so i will try to find some results for you.

I typically use Adobe Premier, Adobe AfterEffects, TMPGEnc, DVDshrink, DIVXtoDVD, SimpleDIVX and Virtual Dub.

In Premier pro 1.5 X2 will be a better choice, yet for other programs you listed is hard to find some tests.

in DVDshrink a 920 will be better probably, yet not 100%, if all cpus will be overclocked.

But there will be no much diference in other programs i think, because noone can see 1-3% diference in real-world usage. Plus it all depends on codecs used, and filters. Thats why is imposible to draw a ultimate answer in: What will be faster in every program/codec/filter u use.

Just thought I'd point out here too that if you're using the latest version of the Divx codec, it apparently includes multi-core support which may mean more of a difference.

Well I can tell you that for DivXtoDVD the 920 will be slightly better.

I had some people run tests on a small clip then converted with DivXtoDVD. As this program is single threaded the dual core aspect doesn't come into it. With this test a 920 @ 4Ghz will be about 5fps faster than an Opteron 165 at 2.6. (i.e 80fps to 75fps)

Saying that, the Opteron will be easier to get running stable at overclocked speeds.
