Is it possible to use a 24 pin power supply with a 20 pin motherboard? If not, is there an adapter that makes it possible? Maybe this is a stupid question but I would like to use my new power supply for a short time with my old system before I put together the new one.

yeah. im using 20 pin for my 24 on my msi. dont think you should overclock it tho.

what PSU specifically?
Most 24 pin connectors have the extra 4 removable. It normally either slides off or clips off.

You could also just leave the extra 4 hanging if they dont come off
