Desktop explorer icon doesn't work

I just encountered a strange phenomena.

I used to be able to connect to the internet by just clicking on the win XP desktop "internet" icon.
Now all of a sudden when I click on the icon, the Internet Properties dialog box pops up. It doesn't matter what I do in this box, I just can't connect to the internet using this icon. I don't even get a "about blanK" internet explorer page.
However, if I press the web/home page button on my keyboard I go right to my home page and connect to the internet with no problem.
Another interesting thing is that when I do a search for explore.exe on my PC it doesn't find the program.
Anyone have any ideas?
It's not really a major problem as I can connect to the internet via my keyboard, but I'm really stumped as to why the Internet Properties dialog box has begun popping up when I click on the explore icon.

First off to the forums. Secondly, why don't you just create another shortcut from the start menu, or create a quick launch in your toolbar? Right click on the toolbar select toolbars and then click quick launch.

Thanks for the welcome note.
This site is a such great source of info.

I know that I can just create the shortcut, but I was curious as to why that situation developed and if anyone had ever experienced that same phenomena. Also why can't I locate the explore.exe on my PC?

Yes i agree, this site in awesome!! Now, if you want to find it you have to search for iexplore.exe and you have to select "More Advanced Options" and "search hidden files and folders".

I 've already done that. Searched all drives and had checked "search hidden files and folders".
I still don't locate it.
I did the same search on two other PCs in my house and found it easily.
I know it's got to be there since I can run Internet Explorer yet I can't find the exe file and my desktop icon went south.
Strange?
