F@H Spotlight #17

This is the 17th in the series of T32 Spotlights! I'll continue to interview members when given a chance. The interviews will appear in a spotlight every now and then as long as the nominations keep coming in! For how to go about nominating a fellow folder, please go to THIS THREAD. To see the ever growing list of who has been interviewed and the expected date of the next spotlight, please go to THIS THREAD.

**ps... this is another 'old' interview, so some info could be off/wrong**

Here we have someone who is to folding what his name suggests. He lurks just under the surface all the while holding back his inner folding fury. He has become a well-beloved member of the team and someone whom we should all be proud of to has as a friend.

You were requested to be interviewed by me in a recent PM i recieved. You do not have to consent to the interview... but that would be dissapointing the audience, eh?

oh, it really really is my pleasant to be invited for the interview!! especially I'm such a "young" member in the team.

When did you join the Team?
I join folding@home and the team around March 05', but only did a couple units before switched back to seti@home. I didn't really start to fold till around Aug. 05'.

If there was something recent that you did that you wanted your fellow teammembers to know about, what would it be?
two words, Watch Out! as some of you know, I'm in the process of rebuilding my home farm, including a new folding cabinet. all I need is the Presler/Yonah to hit the street. (should be a nice upgrade from my Northwood farm) and I'll be bringing back my borg farm online in a month or so too. soooo, just be ready to be eaten by the mad shark in Feb. 06'!!

What is your EOC (extremeoverclockers) stats link?
here

You do not have to give specifics, but what State do you live in, and if you don't mind telling, what town?
Silver Spring, Maryland. (if you know where it is)

How did you initially hear about F@H?
I'm a seti@home addict since Jan. 00'; therefore, I've heard about folding@home being another distributed computing project to search for cure along the way.

After starting, why do you continue to Fold?
1. seti@home classic (phraseI) is shuting down, and I've done and achieved everything I could from seti@home (top3 in oc.com team, top5 in my native country, top400 worldwide, collected every single certificate, etc.). I really don't have much left from the classic. plus seti@home/boinc (phraseII) still hasn't been stable enough that leave my machines have nothing to do (don't you hate to see your rig idling).

2. my dad passed away at the end of 04' after two tough years battle with lung cancer (he doesn't smoke nor drink!), my cousin also suffering from cancer for a few years (which he just pass away a month ago), plus many others that I know is also suffering from this disease. and when I found out my best best friend is also having cancer (currently recovering), I finally sat down and asked myself, may be it's able time for me to change the way I'm using my computing power! instead of searching for the little green man (nothing wrong with it and I'm still into scifi, space, and stuffs), may be I should use the computing power that I have to try to help find the cure! I know I might not be helping much, I know it might take years, even decades before we can find the cure. but what I'm doing in folding@home could have even a slightest chance to save just one single life, I really think it's very very worth my effort of trying! 'cos simply put it, been there, done that. I know how it feels when losing someone close to you. and who knows, may be one day, I could save my own life too!!

What do you do for a living?
surprisingly, my day time job is very non tech related!! I'm more in the customer relationship field. but that also helps me to meet a lots of different people included the boss of my borg farm.

What do you do for fun?
besides being a tech guy, I'm also a car nut. actually I'm more a so called "track junkie" (also a F1 fan). I like cars, but I will only really appreicate them when driving on the race track. I'm also working onto being a track driving instructor next season with the BMW club and Porsche club. and I like skiing too. so, I guess I like anything that has to do with speed. fast car + skiing + fast computer = basically a speed freak.

Is there anything special you do in your spare time that you really enjoy?
besides tech, computer stuffs, just driving on the track. oh, of course I enjoy spending time with friends and my loved one (when I find one....), and (eventually) with my own family.

Time to spill your guts. What are the stats of your main folding rig? Why is it your fave? What all do you use the rig for?
lol.... guess what? I actually don't have a really daily rig!! my personal main machine die on me a couple months ago and I've been painfully waiting for the Presler since then. but when it's out, I plan to rebuild it with a watercooled Presler.

I'm currently using my server (a Northwood 2.4c @ 3.1ghz, stock v., 1:1 memory) and my laptop (PentiumM 1.8ghz) for most of my daily thing. but since I do quite a lot of video encoding too, it could be a pain when using them sometimes....

Do you have a Borg-Farm? If so, how many computers, and what are they? (CPU, RAM)
hell yeah, you really think I'm paying the electric bill of the computing power needed to dethrone our powah daddy Nik. however they are offline right now. how many? well, my sig. isn't joking, I really lose count all I know is they are P4@3ghz with 1gb of ram, and is "around" 100 or so.... don't worry, I will bring them back online soon!!

What are your future goals? What do you most want to accomplish with your life?
stay healthy and be happy. really, I'm not looking to make all the money in the world, all I want is just make enough to give my family a decent life without worrying much. am I asking too much? well, in my dreams, I do want to be a F1 racing driver tho....heheee....

here's some other stuffs of me....

my blog
my htpc
things that I really do enjoy

p.s. Frank, I'm wondering who suggested me??

As for who suggested you... I don't remember! LOL

***Update!!!***
AQUARIUM!!!!

Landshark has some more pics for you to see!

oh yeah... Landshark.... I already got another 3-4 interviews (i think off the top of my head) in the wings... but you made the offer to help... and i'll extend an offer back here publicly.

Would you like to help out with the F@H Spotlights? You can interview them however you want, use whatever questions you want, post them up as fast as you want, just make sure to PM me a link to each one so I can add it to the Spotlights sticky.

Sound good?

**edit**

i'm gonna add a provisinal list of who i have to the spotlights list.... wont' put a date or anything to them... just to let you know who i have interviewed and have thier interview waiting to be posted...

**edit2**
updated the spotlights list to cover what i have (interviews waiting) and whom i've yet to interview

LS ... nice to meet you some more

I like fast too ... but budget limits me to boats ... and to not really fast ones at that! Although in my younger years I did have a few motorcycles ... but they were not fast by today's standards.

My boss is into cars and racing ... he runs a GT3? in the porche club of canada and is an instructor too ... he can afford it.

You have been a very welcome addition to our team ... and not just for the points (although that is nice too ).

BTW... not sure if your aquarium is still on hold, but maybe there is still hope for the p5ld2 as an economical DC folding platform. I know you have seen the recent 300 fsb sucesses on the intel forum ... april pressler price decreases and return of QMD's? would certainly be a nice combination.

Fold on !

And THF .... another great interview!!!

THF, sure I could help and I think I would stick with your created questions for now as most people thing it's a really good format and help others to know the person more. just let me know what else I need to do or to help.

yeah Pete, tell you boss I love the GT3 (what color btw?)!! and was thinking to get a used one too!! I just like the feeling when using a slower car (M3) to keep up or to pass some faster machines (Turbos/GT3s). I still remember after that session of chasing video is taking (btw, it's was in the advance group and heard he's an instructor in that PCA region too), when I pull back to the pit, that 996TT driver stopped me and asked "hey, were you the guy who's at my a$$ the whole time? man, your car is fast! what have you done on it?" and I causally replied "oh, the engine is BONE STOCK!!" and looking at his face turns red.....

I saw him last year in another PCA event, and heard he had since mod his car with 500+hp.... guess he sure like to run away from me....

yeah, that Exige is really nice track toy!! but I just found the latest one and really really love it!! the all new 997GT3!!! man, wish I could afford one!!! (it just came up on Porsche's site yesterday!)

back to folding/puter, yeah I saw that thread, but I guess I'll put any more addition folder on hold (in my home farm) for now. price cut is in April, but Conroe will be out in another 2 months or so in summer. so, I'll just wait for conroe before I get anymore rig. but the "Aquarium" is pretty much done and has 3 layers running. will post update/pics later!

even tho I most likely will not add more fish in my aquarium and holding to rebuild my main rig (but did upgraded my server rig to a 920/P5WD2-E/4.15ghz so, encoding/ripping isn't an overnight process anymore!! ), I do think to get a CoreDuo laptop to replace my Dell 600m and still thinking to upgrade my HTPC to a Yonah + 7900 tho...

GT3 is yellow ... I would have to lose some weight or get bigger seats to drive it without getting injured . He was driving it on the road early last year to break it in ... had a hell of a time clearing those speed bumps!

It is kind of cool comin' up behind someone just waiting to pass ... since the M/C days are over i only get to to it occassionally with a couple of the boats.

You would love my retro car (not!)... a roadmaster wagon 5.7L ... yes a woody . My son actually likes it for hauling 8 people (partiers) ... cruises the highways at 140 km at 2200 rpm - a torque monster ... but not too nimble. But it can haul my 5000 lb 450 hp 1.5 mpg Formula without hardly breaking a sweat.

nuttin' wrong with torque monsters.... i had a van like that... (till the transmission died).... could haul any weight without a even a groan..... once had 3 tons of gravel in it... and it handled it like a dream.... did flatten 2 tires though... other than that... 3 tons of gravel wasn't a problem.....

the initial test seems pretty promising especially at relatively low stock speed!! I just can't wait to get my hand on it!! this coming 3 months is gonna be a loooong one.....

I'm thinking I might just skip playing with the yonah and just wait for the conroe (then merom for my htpc) since it's only 3 months away.....

I was going to build a DC or QC AMD system but now I'll have to wait until Intel puts the cards down on the table for all to see. This fall I plan on one or the other. QMDs or other high points WUs will be a factor too.
