In their specs they seem the same (vertex, pipes, etc), differences r 6800GS has higher wattage (75W Vs 65W 7600 - no power line needed - ) so is heat. 7600's Mem. bus sucks! (128 bit Vs 256bit 6800GS) just 22.4 GBps Vs. 32GBps.
Both clock differ and mfg. process (being 7600 better)

... at the end of the day, having same price, which is supposed to be better?

...OC'ingly speaking?

None

They are both the same. While GS has 256bit, GT has higher clocks which will make up for it. However GS will perform better in some games then GT cause it has more data throughoutput.

Anandtech shows the 7600GT beating the 6800GS in all the benchmarks they had

Ive got a XFX 6800GS XXX edition, which is an amped up version of the standard 6800GSs. In all the games i've played the 6800GS has performed well. However i've looked at the specifications of the 7600GT and as RedDragonXXX said it has higher clocks. But in terms of performance, 6800GS definately

I can tell you this my 6800GS clocks to 534/1250. From what I've seen they are very close in performance. I think if they are both overclocked they are very close except the 6800GS will be better with eye candy up because of the 256 bit bus. But stock to stock if you get a 7600GT at 500/1500 like the EVGA it should beat out a 425/1000 6800GS. As an overclocker I would still buy a 6800GS because it is $50 or so cheaper and supports HDR and SM3.0 . So your not giving up any new tech at a much cheaper price. The 7900GT on the other hand is a big step up in performance and that's why I have one on order.

Actually - with lots of people saying 6800GS, i have to disagree. The only advantage it has over the 7600GT is the memory bandwidth. The advantage the 7600GT has is the internal structure of the pixel pipes and shaders has been altered, adding an extra MADD unit to replace the MULT that was there before - hence why the 7600GT pulls ahead of the 6800GS in all the reviews.

Check anandtech and beyond3d for more clarification if you like, but my money will always be on the side of the 7600GT, even with its diminished memory bus.

Less power consumption for more performance, and they seem to be overclockable to a pretty mad degree like their little brother, the 6600GT.

Again those benchmarks are stock to stock. I agree a 7600GT@560/1400 will beat a 6800GS@425/1000. My arguement was both cards being overclocked. And all the reviews I've seen have factory clocks of 560-580 and 1500+memory. I am also talking about actual gaming not senthetic benchmarks. Say what you will non of the scores I have seen beat my 6800GS except for 3Dmark 06'. Either way I don't think the little bit of performance difference if any is worth $50-75.

I fail to see how a Quake 4 or FEAR runthrough can be considered 'synthetic'.

We dont know how well the 7600GT overclocks yet, so its unfair to say 'my 6800GS overclocked beats a stock 7600GT' because, well, of course it will. When comparing cards to one another, you should ideally compare the cards at stock, the features, and the price.

At stock, the 7600GT beats the 6800GS, its cheaper, runs cooler and it has more features. It's as simple as that. Now of course the 6800GS can overclock pretty high - most to the 500Mhz range on the core, but until there are some results that say '7600GT crap at overclocking' theres no reason not to choose the £149 7600GT over the £189 6800GS. If the 7600GT when overclocked can still hold its own against a 6800GS when overclocked, then i'd say its a better monetary investment and a saving of £40 overall.

this kinda reminds me of the 6600gt vs 6800nu debate. i personaly am thinking of getting the 7600gt once my tax return comes back. hopefully they're good OCers like their 6600gt cousions :)

I don't own one but all the reviews I've read say the max OC on the 7600GT's are @600/1600. Here in the US the 7600GT is more expensive than the 6800GS. That's the only reason I said go for the 6800 but if there were cheaper as you say they are in the UK I would buy the 7600GT also.

Here the 6800GS's are all more expensive than the 7600GT's, stock ones by no particular maker are £134.95 - making it way cheaper than a 6800GS for the same performance.

oh geez i'm real torn between these two.

ok, what i want is to play Oblivion @ 1024x768 w/HDR OR Bloom+4xAA at decent framerates, like 30 and up. the evga 7600GT i'm looking at is $190, the 6800GS is $170.

i read a newegg review of 7600GT claiming he was playing Oblivion @ 1280x1024 w/4xAA +Bloom w/no problems.

the price is negligible, and right now i'm leaning towards the 7600GT cuz it'll definitely fit in my case and has the performance advantage immediately. and it's Evga so i can do the step up thing right?

help :( i needs my Oblivion

I was devbating as well, for those in the US you may wanna check out ncix.com, a better deal then the egg and no rebate , shipping is reasonable as well. they have the 7600GT on sale for $199 canadian or the equal of $170 US, the 6800GS is actually a tad more. I would say get the 7600GT, it is newer and it is built better and it is easily equal in performance if not better in all cases
