Problamatic CD Dirve...I Think

Hey Guys,
Everytime my girlfriend places a CD in her CD drive or DVD drive the computer completley freezes up, this also occurs when my girlfriend plugs in a memory stick or her Zen Touch. The egg timer icon starts up and thats it, the computer freezes up. I was thinking of a format but would I end up back at square one? Also a format would have to be the last resort as my girlfriend has lot of coursework saved on there. It has only started to happen recently. The system is not overclocked in any way Please help. System specs are below.

AMD Athlon XP3200
1GB Crucial PC3200 RAM
Abit NF-7S Motherboard
Geforce FX5700 LE Graphics Card
20GB Maxtor Hard drive (master)
10GB Maxtor Hard Drive (slave)
W-indows XP Pro W SP/2

Thanks alot guys James
