What is my best option right now?

Currenly I have:

2500xp overclockable to 3200 speeds
Epox 8RDA+ mobo
9700pro
1gig corsair 3200xms rma
ide drives

I'd like to play Oblivion when it comes out and actually enjoy it. What are the most cost effective upgrades I can do?

You'll net the largest gain by upgrading your video card. I would pick up a 6800/GS. Everything else is probably OK unless you wanted to upgrade to 939. (If you've got the cash to upgrade, that'd be my suggestion.)

video card will probably give you the best results, but its kinda pointless to upgrade to agp now. whats your budget?

You'd do well with a new AGP, or better with a new PCI-E vid card. Which means you need a new mobo. Which means you need a new processor and ram. And because of those you might need a new PSU.

Your decision here must be completely based off of budget. Getting PCI-E would be a major upgrade. Going AGP would mean you'll be asking the same question months from now.

Well, a pci-e card doesnt have that much of a gain over an agp slot, its been discussed many times on here.

I wonder if you need any upgrade at all. Your rig can probably handle it right now. Maybe not at the highest resolution and all the eye candy, but it probably will play well. Unless there is money burning a hole in your pocket, do nothing.

Having said that, go for the video card next. I agree with roboto that you don't get much with pci-e that you can't get with a good 8x AGP card. And, you don't have to buy a mobo, ram, and cpu.

Thanks guys, a buddy of mine is offering me his 6600GT, I figure that would be enough to run 1024x768 with some eyecandy in Oblivion. Most reviews says its 50% faster.

I feel that I lost out on the 939 upgrade cycle, I'm way too late so I might as well just wait for the next big thing
