Setup for Overclocking the 820D

Hello, before I begin please get an overview of my current situation by referring to this thread:

http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.p...60#post4377860

This is my current rig:

Intel Pentium D 820 2.8 ghz dual core
MSI P4N Diamond Motherboard
2x Corsair Value Select 1 Gb DDR2 533 memory (2gb total)
XFX 7800 GTX 256Mb Nvidia Graphics Card
Antec TP2-550W Power supply
ZALMAN CNPS 120mm Copper LED CPU Cooler

The Pentium D 820 is not fully compatible with my motherboard, only runs in single core mode. I have thought of every possible solution and the one that is most future proof/ cost effective is this:

1. Upgrading my motherboard to one that fully supports my processor, Reccomendations please? (probably going for the Asus P5WD2-P)

2. Investing in some good cooling, again recommendations please (Ninja or water?)

3. Saving my cash for conroe or the Intel price drop.

Now that you know my situation here is my main concern:

How well will I be able to OC the 820? I know its not the best for OCing but I'm sorta stuck with it atm.

Will my current components (minus the motherboard of course) be able to achieve a good overclock? I'm not looking to go to the moon here, 3.4ghz would be wonderful (although I want the highest OC possible).

Has anyone OCed the 820 before? If so please provide a link or info regarding memory timings, voltage, cooling, and components please.

I see people overclocking the 805 to 4ghz so I dont think its asking too much to overclock my 820 to 3.4 or so. I know the 820s run hot though. I am willing to invest in water cooling to achieve a better overclock, but if it can be done with air ill stick with that.

PS There are alot of different variations of the Asus P5WD2, Which one is best and why? (dont want to buy the most expensive if its a feature I wont use)

Thanks

well I have the 820D on the P5WD2 Premium @ 3.56ghz stock voltage and the intel heat sink. I dont fool around with memory timings much because I dont know that much about it.

Current parts:
SmartPower 450W revision 1
P5WD2-P
820D
2X 1 gig sticks of samsung ddr2 533
1 X 74 gig raptor
1 x 6600gt (soon 7800...)

from my understanding there is not a heck of a lot of difference between the premium and non-premium ones... the popular one out there right now is the E-P

the overclock really depends on the chip and the ram. I havent used the value select but would assume its ok. Each 820 seems to top off at a different speed and a few people buy and sell a few chips before getting one they like.

as for the water cooling. I am working on hooking mine up within the next couple of weeks and can post some results if you want

you could save for an intel price drop but doing that your chip is worth less then current. Also just because the chips drop in price doesnt mean the motherboards will so you will still be paying about the same for a mobo.

expect about 3.4 on that chip under air. Stratus what you have there is above average. I've using the value select and although I haven't pushed it to see what it can do. It can do what I have in the sig pretty easily

my ram is 4-4-4-10... would going to 3-3-3 make that much difference?

The MSI P4N Diamond Motherboard needs a BIOS update for full Smithville support. Those Nforce chipsets don't overclock as well as Intel chipsets, but the processor is capable of 3.4 to 3.6 gig with decent cooling. Whether your motherboard holds you back or not, I don't know.

Stratus, what memory ratio are you running, 1:1? If so, then you could try tightening timings. Bump up memory voltage to maybe 2.0v and play around with lowering timings one at a time.

In response to the people asking if im sure about whether or not mine is supported, go into the compatability list. It says that Pentium D's work fine with the board on everything except one spot: Scroll to the bottom of the compatability chart and in small print it says "Note: Pentium D 820 only supported in single core mode" DAMN THEMMMM, ill never buy MSI again.

Also in other articles it says the 820D only works in single core mode on most nforce chipsets.

Ok, dump that mobo then. Nforce chipsets pretty much suck with Intel processors anyway.

The trouble with upgrading right now is that there is currently no mobo available that will support Conroe right out of the box. You could take a chance with an i975 chipset and try doing a Conroe mod later on. If you plan to upgrade later, why not just get a cheaper mobo to get you by for now. For example, the Asus P5LD2 works pretty good with the 820. I would not recommend this mobo if you had a Presler or Cedar Mill, but the Smithville does ok on it.

Well I updated the BIOS but as I suspected it still only works in single core mode according to 3dmark details, if theres another way to check please let me know.

Articles say that it has something to do with chipset limitations and nividia said they wont be working to fix it because the 820 isnt important to gamers.

You don't have to, he could just reinstall the HAL I believe

It says Uniprocessor pc, how do I reinstall the HAL? If I reinstall the HAL, will I have to reinstall all my programs and such?

Just right click on it and reinstall the driver but select the multi cpu one

No you shouldn't have to reinstall anything
