Processor selection

A year ago, strapped for cash but in need of a new computer, ended out getting a barebone powerspec with a Intel® D915PGN. I had to cheap out on just about everything hardware-wise, but was satisfied with the upgrade potential (for now at least). Money isn't going to be a tough issue for much longer though.

Not being one to hold back the spare change when it comes to system upgrades, I've been eyeballing a dual-core processor. The mobo's spec lists Intel P4 Extreme Edition processor in an LGA775 socket with a 800 MHz system bus. I'd hate to find out the hard way that a dual-core wouldn't work or require more than just a better cooling system.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

I dont know what to tell you, alot of us that are about to buy are waiting for Conroe (intel's new, not yet here, offering that well, spanks everything else on the market currently)
And you could almost build a complete system for the cost of that processor

another note.. I wouldn't want to invest in that partiular part unless the rest of my system was the BEST money can buy. and was planning on putting it under single stage phase (or MAYBE exellent water) at least.

Buy a 805 until Conroe is released. It's not very expensive and highly overclockable

I have a tough time recommending the Extreme Edition which is highly overpriced. Besides, if you are planning on using that D915PGN mobo which has an i915 chipset, I really don't think it will support the dual cores. The mobo might support single core EE processors. Look to see if it supports Pentium D, if not, then you can't upgrade to dual core without also upgrading the motherboard.
