First time p4 user some questions...

I'm getting a p4+mobo as a hand-me-down from my brother and had a few questions.

My current system (Don't laugh)

AMD 2500+ barton @ 1833mhz
3x512MB Corsair Ram PC2700
MSI KT4V
WD 7200 RPM 8MB Cache
EVGA 5700 256MB

Hes giving me a Abit IC7-MAX3 and a p4 3.0 478.

Is this a significant upgrade and is it good enough to play games like oblivian and world of warcraft? Is it even worth the hassel? It is pretty old and I can just get like a 3200+ amd 64 and mobo for under $200...

Are there any 478 pci-express boards that I can upgrade to since the Abit one is AGP only?

Thanks for your time.

Significant upgrade? Not really. but it is an upgrade. Your vid card will be the biggest bottleneck in Oblivion (great game btw).

AFAIK, there arent any socket 478/PCI-E mobo's. There may be a couple out there but they probably arent worth your money.

A 3200+ A64 + mobo would be a pretty good upgrade though. But you'd still be limited by your vid card in games.

Socket 478 board with PCI-E.

Now I do not. DO NOT! recommend you buy that board. It is a waste of $150.

The system your getting is a small upgrade. Enough to hold you over till a much larger upgrade, i.e move to DDR2, PCI-E, etc..

It is a good mobo, and the system would be able to keep you floating for a while. The only problem I see would be you 3x512mb Pc2700 ddr ram. They are a tad on the slow side for the motherboard + cpu. But if they can do +200mhz fsb then you would still be in the game. If they can't do it, you would be forced to buy some new memory, and buying old ddr would be a waist of money if you ask me. Then you could just as well spend the extra money and buy a brand new up to date system, which would last for quite some time compared to your "hand me down" system. That's just me 2 cents. Keep it real.
