Anyone ever used Direct2Drive?

I'm thinking of using IGN's Direct2drive service to buy a game or two.
http://www.direct2drive.com/

One game I'm looking at is Aow: High Treason. But I'm also looking at Swat 4 Gold too.

So any good experiences with them? Can you back them up to DVD-Rs?

i have bought 4 games on the Direct2Drive system. mostly at times when i was in the boonies where there are no video game stores around, didnt have any games on my laptop, and didnt have the willpower to wait for something to get shipped to me. my experiences with it have been good. all were qiuck downloads and the games ran without a hitch. dont know about backing them up

I have used it once. Pretty easy.
Enter in the CC info, purchase, download.

When running the installer to the game it will ask for a key which is given upon payment confirmation.

Download speeds were about 200-300 kps.

Quick easy and saved gas to the store.

I don't know about the back up, but you get a receipt and can download the game at anytime if you uninstall it and want to reinstall it.

I used Direct2Drive for Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and it worked easily. I downloaded at about 300-400 kbps and the game is easily transfered to a DVD. I know have a back up anytime i want to format my computer. Good system. Only bad part is that if you are running a game that will have many updates, like an MMORPG or something of the sort, you have to get the updates from Direct2Drive or so i have heard. I dont have any experience with that service yet.

Nope, just use any regular patching service, I dled EQ2 from D2D and it just patches automaticly. Other games, like farcry or something or other, you just need to get the regular patch and install it. No problems at all.

I used it for rainbow six 3 and was not satisfied at all. They limit you to a certain amount of downloads, you don't have a physical copy (obviously), and with the D2D version of rainbow six, I couldn't even play on some servers.... Never again will I download a game from that service.

That sucks Herr Rogers. I looked in their FAQ real quick and found this.

How can I save my download to cdrom?

Once you have downloaded the file you are welcome to save it for later on a cdrom. Save yourself time downloading again. Remember, each time you install and activate the game you are deactivating the previous license. Install wisely!

I want to put my game on 2 more computers at my house, can I do that?

No. The games are for one person, not multiple. While we appreciate you own many computers, we are sure you don't play on more than one at a time. The game is not to be shared on a private network or otherwise.

How many times can I install the game I bought?

As many times as you like. As stated above, remember your game is for you alone. Each time you install it you deactivate any previous licenses.

Well...I guess I got owned on the unlimited downloads thing. Either I don't remember correctly or it has changed. I'd vote for not remembering I'm 100% sure on not being able to join certain servers though just because I bought a D2D version...

here in alaska, theres only 1 store that sells PC games... when I asked them when they were getting in oblivion, they didn't even know what I was talking about

they had to go look it up on some inventory sheet, to see that the game was coming a week after release.

being impatient having waited 3 years for this game, I broke down and tried direct2drive.

worked great for me.
the download after your done can be burned to a disc, but no matter what, the game still needs to connect to the internet, and be verified that you are the owner of the game, with a online watermark service.
I had to reinstall it, cause I borked my OS playing with too much hardware switching, and it wasn't a pain in the butt to redo, but I can definatly see how it can be inconvienent to those that like installing thier game on multiple PC's.

not a issue for me though, I only need one game to run on one PC.
on the plus side, getting a game like this, also has a small benifit of no longer needing a disc in the drive when you play.

yes, you can get a normal no CD hack.
I just like the idea of a game not needing one from the start

Overall, it was a great service, and I am impressed with them.

I tried D2D since the local EB games was sold out of Oblivion.
I had to re-downlaod it as there was some sorta interuption in my download.
I tried again at 5 am and the speed was 600 kb/s for me as opposed to 120 kb/s at 9 pm.
That was my only beef w/ FilePlanet..the slow initial download...oh and you also had to have Winzip version 10 to unzip oblivion.
I only use WinRar and was mad as heck that I could not unzip the bloody thing.
I will use D2D again only if I am desperate.
I prefer having the Box/CD/Manual. The price for the download was not much different than i woulda' paid in a store.
I give it a 7 out of 10. [B][I]
