hello,
here is how my parts list for what i'm going to have:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817111021
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833127125R (I already own)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16812189038 (x4)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16812189042 (x1)

here is the setup:
static ips on 2 desktops and 3 laptops, all laptops are wireless
fiber optic going to the dlink wireless port 1 (cat 5)> to the switch port 1 (cat 5)
switch port 2 to desktop 1 (win xp pro) (cat 6) (in sig)
switch port 2 to desktop 2 (win xp pro) (cat 6)
laptops 1, 2, and 3 respectivly (xp pro, xp media center, win 2k)

1:network
i believe that this will work through my limited knowledge. but if not let me know i can change just about anything. i will have wep on the dlink router. it will not have dynamic ip active.

2:file sharing issue
on desktop 1 i have folders that i want to share over the network that dont need a password to access and some folders that do need a password so that only i can access them. the problem that i am running into is that any folder that i have shared on the network requires my login name and pass to access.

one thought that i have is to just make a guest account on my desktop and set the user restrictions on those folders to just the guest. if that would work how would i set the restrictions. or is there another way?

i think thats all the info if you need to know anything else ill get back asap. i dont have the internet at my house yet :bang head :bang head :bang headso i am doing this at work now. life is so boring without the net

Well, just to clarify. You do not have any fiber optic ports on any of that equipment. And yes, your network setup will work. If you're going to hard code the static IP addresses then just turn of DHCP on the router. As for the sharing of files, it's going to be an issue on the Security tab, not the Sharing tab of the Folder Properties. Also, make sure you enable your guest account otherwise it won't work(been in a cussing fit of rage before the light bulb went off in my head).
