need help on p4 2.4B system

i know this is very old p4 system.
A friend asked me to add more memory.
So, iam going to add 1GB to the current 256mb now. Here is the specs i got from that pc ( via pm)

Board : P4I45Gx_PE (so it is ASROCK, *i think)
cpu: 2.4B (b/c i asked him to run cpu-z and he got 133fsb and 18x multiplier)

i dont know the ram speed on 256mb.

My question is what the cheapest 2x512 sticks of ram can i add in ?
(someone told me any pc3200 would do, however i'm afraid this board might not like it )

thanks

It's a i845G chipset with onboard graphics. Get the cheapest PC3200 stick(s) you can find cuz they'll only run at PC2700 speed max.

If there is three memory slots on the motherboard, I would suggest removing the 256MB stick, and using the first 2 slots for the new 2x 512MB sticks. This will increased compatibility and stability. Especially if you intent to overclock. Ask what revision cpu-z show, if it is one of the newer steppings it could be possible to hit 3GHz (@ 18x 166FSB).
If you do not intent to overclock the CPU/FSB, you maybe able to use the odd 256MB stick in memory slot 3 if you need more that tiny bit extra ram.
If you decide to run the new 2x 512MB (1GB) and do not intend overclock the CPU/FSB, it maybe possible to reduce the timings for low latency and/or run the 3:4 divider for higher bandwidth.
PC3200 will be fine (a better choice actually), its just DDR1 ram the same as any other, just higher speed rated.

I pretty much agree with what Microfire said. If CPU-Z says it's at least a C1 stepping, then it should easily run at 150 FSB (2.7 gig) with default vcore and stock cooling. With 2X512 PC3200 RAM, you could run the 3:4 memory ratio for in spec DDR400 speed. That would be a nice upgrade, a boost in RAM capacity along with a bump in performance from faster FSB and clock speed. Yank the old 256 stick and sell it, you won't need it.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145440
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820146351
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820141437
all are pc3200they will work at slower speeds so no worries.. range in price $76.50-$79.25

personally i would choose ocz for the warrenty they offer on the memory.
using newegg the 2x512mb pc2700 starts at $79 and goes up. see below
