First overclock... will my PC work?

Its old.... real old. Its got the basic comcrap mobo, and a P3. Windows XP pro, 365MB of ram. The compter is from around 2001. Can i overclock it? And how can i overclock it? Do i use a program, or do I perform it internaly?

All depends on what hardware it is running, more importantly if the motherboard's bios will let you change FSB, if not then you out of luck unless you swap to board. Software overclocking is possible providing it can see and access the clock generator chip of the motherboard in question.
All in all, it is not likely worth the effort. However it could be a good place to start to learn the basics of overclocking, providing you can buy the right second hand parts cheap enough until you are ready to spend more money on another machine.
Open up the cover, have a look around, get familar with the parts, write part numbers down and specs. You can use the free version of everest to find what part spec and details within windows.
Best of luck.

So, we have a compaq PC which means manufactured - Can you get into BIOS?? If so what options are available for you?

More than likley a PC from 2001 running a P3 will be ATX based, and not rely on jumpers to set multiplier ratios / FSB / Voltabe etc. After that, read the stickies, and the post microfire made... and get your hands dirty and start climbing the learning curve. Since it is such an old computer, you prolly dont need to feel bad about messing it up, so that should help reduce any stress levels.

OH OOOHH one last thing - if you want to get familiar with the hardware in a hurry, take the computer apart, and re assemble - if it works congrats, if it dosent, come back and we will try and lend a hand.

get into bios and see if it has anything there re:cpu mhz or look at the pcb really close, it may have a few jumpers and if you're lucky a legend for a few of them

Press the key that the bios states.

like

Press <F2> to enter setup.

or

Press <Del> to enter setup.

different computers differ.

Just speculating, but I bet he won't be able to change the speed of a compaq even if he can get into the bios.

Oh you will want to press the appropriate key during boot up. try F1 if the other two don't work.

Pull the side cover off. Look for the clock generator chip on the motherboard, and write down the brand and numbers on some paper. Download CPUFSB and see it you can match any in the program, if so you might be in luck.

Well.... Im back. I never OC'd it, instead, it crashed on me. So I took it to the woods, and shot at it. First chance i got to use my USP... it was soo much fun.
