From those statistics you would think the 3800+ would kick the snot out of the 165 Opteron

So why does it not???
 
The opty has more L2, and can easily be oc'd to atleast 2.5ghz, if not like 2.7ghz......
 
I am not sure about this, but I think opteron 165 has heatpipe HS and the x2 3800 is regular HS. this alone should be worth the difference+ opteron's better IC and more L2 cache.
 
The people buying these chips tend to be overclocking them, so a 200 MHz difference in base frequency is completely irrelevant since you will be running it much higher than that anyway.

The 165 has more cache, generally better overclocking capabilities, and can be had for $267 from Monarch.
 
also u can get the 165 for $275 shipped from monarch as they always have it couponed down to 270 (always) just gotta do a little looking around to find them

Where? I've been looking and all the ones i find posted have expired.
 
clock for clock the 165 is better


as far as 3dmarks and fps in games a 165 will match a x2 3800 clocked 200mhz less and surpass it at the same clocks, i have had both so I should know.. and yes the 165 comes with a great cooler which i am using and gives me a 1000mhz oc and 44c max on hot days...

Opty 165 is a great chip, and lots of people here have one. But why not wait untill mid July when conroe and am2 comes out? YOu could get either one of them, or a cheaper optyt 165 hopefully
 
and what advantage are you going to see by getting AM2? besides the possibility of lower 939 prices? the switch to an immature, more expensive ddr technology? the prices you are going to have to pay to build a machine that will match a well built opty 165 machine are going to be rediculous. and for such a minimal performance increase. of course no one really knows how the AM2 chips are really going to perform. but i hear they are no better than the current 939 chips.
 
if u can't find a code just wait they are there every month
also did you try it on the retail or the oem ussually it only works on oem
