done with windows for good now...

...or at least on an actual physical partition. I just installed windows xp on vmware in my ubuntu install, and its performance is actually better than I could have hoped for. other than a slight lag in the gui, it runs 90% as fast as it does natively, takes up much less ram (400mb total in ubuntu with it running), and best of all now I don't have to reboot to do anything in windows. I haven't removed windows from my harddrive yet, but I plan on doing it in the next few days. I highly recomend this to anyone that wants to get rid of windows but can't.

just thought I'd share my success story..

Is running XP in VMware suitable for gaming?

I was thinking about that kind of setup, but the 2 reasons why I keep WinXP running are BF" and Oblivion...

Full-Linux would be real cool

For games like that, no.

Yes, if you want to play solitare and minesweeper. Otherwise, it might be faitrly slow. It emulates all your hardware.

It's funny that out of the various projects I want to work on this summer, setting up a WinXP dual-boot is the one thing I haven't started on yet. I do intend to get to it eventually though, Fallout {I,II} and Theif have been waiting

EDIT: too bad GemRB isn't yet in a state to play Infinity Engine games properly

I wish I could dual boot. What stops me is my ATI fanboyism. My lappy is completly ATI chipset and video card so performance sucks. And my main rig is in the same boat. Yes it has support, and yes the performance isn't too bad, but its nothing compared to the performance I have seen on Nvidia. Only dedicated linux rigs for now. Do dual boot

Cheater-

Have you tried the ATI 8500up version of PCLinuxOS? It has dedicated ATI graphics drivers preinstalled. I don't know if it has ATI chipset drivers though.

Might be worth trying on your laptop.

I just noticed it now and might try it tonight maybe, see if it likes my PC.

In all honesty, I would completely remove XP from my laptop if there was a version of Steinberg Cubase SX for Linux.
Failing that, I would use Linux as my primary O/S and XP via VMWare if Cubase worked that way. Unfortunately it doesn't .
Maybe one day it will be possible .

i'm only keeping xp on my harddrive for the moments when i feel like playing grand theft auto, or the like. and even then its a "ugh, i have to reboot"

my ubuntu server had 90 days uptime last night before the power went out. (i moved in here 89 days ago)

Isnt it sad that every person who said they dual boot only do it cause they cant play the games they want on Linux?

That is not really my reason right now, my reason is cause I am still learning Linux, but once I figure it out enough to do my day to day things, the only thing that will keep Windows on my system is games.

I say we all go on a hunger strike untill the big game makers start doing Linux versions!

Okay, now that is over, I am going to get a cheeseburger

Well, I think better that it's only for the games, than for more mission-critical stuff. Though really, most commercial multimedia still depends largely on software that hasn't been ported to linux -- photoshop for example.

And (some) of the big game makers do have linux ports, id comes to mind as a very good example. Them and the guys who do the do the Unreal Tournament series (don't play the games, so don't know who does the developing).

If your day-to-day computer stuff is vital -- ie it's what provides for the bread and butter in the house -- then foregoing Windows gets you learning more quickly. It's not for everyone, though.
