my original post was here:

it was a toss up between two systems as an upgrade to my aging AMD xp2800 (oc'ed to 3100'sih)
but since i made a decision based on talking to some friends...

having read as much as possible and then speaking with some friends just a moment ago.. i decided to go with the 805 D solution (price to performance)
now.. my question remains, since i am noobish to intel.. is this a good setup for the 805 D with regards to oc'ing and compatibility:

case + psu

cpu

mem

mobo

any concerns with those items? anyone believe i will be able to oc well with this?

thought and comments appreciated.

looks pretty good but im not sure how well that power supply will work. if your going to overclock your also going to want to get a better cooler for the 805 it runs very hot.

That PSU is a dual rail 12V1 16A, 12V2 18A..
you want a single rail psu with 30A+

You should get respectable results with the Asus i945P motherboard but a referb i955X Asus board would should get you right about the best results possible for close to the same amount of money :)

It will depend on your cooling how well the cpu overclocks. Because with stock cooling you will not hit anything above 3.4 or 3.6 I think. But with some additional money spend on fans/cooling it may work nice. As said, I would take a look at the psu, because some psu that come with a case are pretty much crap.

awsome case, good chip, good memory, good motherboard... crapy PSU. Get one with out an included PSU and get a 450w+ Sparkel, Fortron, Zippy, Emacs, OCZ, Seasonic....

Dont get the modstream it has dual rails, get the powerstream if you get an OCZ. :)

*edit*its not dual rails, it just doent perform as well, more resistance and a different design*/edit*

gonna go with this PSU (thanks)

i thought people said they needed 500w+ for their 805 D's? i only plan on running 1 hard drive and 1 cd drive...so i'm good right?
let me ask a dumb question.. whats the dual 12v mean? what's it used for..and why don't i need it?

and this case

along with the above mentioned items.. you smart guys think it'll work well?

thanks for the amount of help.. i expected great assistance and wasn't let down at all.
would buy from this thread again! A++

The idea behind dual rails was a cherry one. The way I've been taught is that dual rails give a dedicated circuit to the CPU, but typically they are limited to only 15-20Amps. So when some of these circuits were in the face of some major Intel loads they became flaky. So people needed to go to the single rails with big amps to feed their needs.

Also, I just bought an ASUS P5WD2($109) refurb/OEM board and the 805. This thing is sweet dude at COD2. And while I've owned the Venice 3200 and an ASRock, the game just feels sooooo much crispier. I can't really explain it, but Intel's with good RAM just feel mofo crispy.

And that scythe 120, you will need it, believe that.

Looks like you can upgrade to a 120mm fan in the back of that case.. not bad, alot of peps mod the print medal grills by cutting them out, putting some window trim around the hole and a open fan grill for more free airflow.. Just an idea for you :)

It seems you just copy and pasted my forshortend link
here is the PSU he picked http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817103464
btw.. Ive heard nothing about how accurate the rails are on that model.. you might want to look into testing it when you get it.. Well I would, and I would pot mod it ;) WOOT! :attn:

Sentential

the newegg reviews on the AW8 say it blows for overclocking... thoughts?
or did you mean the AW8-Max? which is $139.00

is there a big difference between the 945 and 955 in terms of performance or OC'ing ability?

hypothetical question

if i picked the Pentium D 930 .. and OC'ed that.. do i still need a huge PSU like i do for the 805?
--yeah, i do realize that i would change memory to DDR2 667.

i'd like to get my cost at under 1grand.. but if i pick the 930.. i go over 1k by 60 or so bucks.. yeah i know that it's jut 60 bucks.. but if i am able to get a cheaper PSU that will perform on par with the hardware.. why not.

930D and 805D have about the same power needs at the same clocks and the 930D clocks higher so you would definatley need a powerfull PSU I would suggest this one

PSU's is not were you can skimp, If you must go cheap get a cheaper case, or wire it up in a big drawer :p

Or snag these sticks and get the rebate with a quickness ;)

yes they are great sticks for this system :D

What video card did you pick?

i ended up deciding to get the x1800xt

those mem sticks look good, but they arent 667..which is what my system will use
