Question Safe Distance Between Subwoofer & PC Tower?

What is considered to be the minimum safe distance between your speaker system's subwoofer and your computer tower? My system is the Logitech Z-640 5.1. Thanks.

Mine's been under 2 feet away before, no problems. I have the 5300's, a biiiig magnet on that sub.

is that what you're worried about? Magnets damaging your hard drives?

Well, the I can tell you that with the Logitech Z640s, you have nothing to worry about. They only have a 4"-5" woofer with a pretty small magnet. I had my old Z640s sitting right next to my tower, no problems. Also, if you are afraid of causing HD damage, dont worry. There are far more powerful magnets inside a HD, than anything speakers around. For the most part, I would say keep Large subs around 2+ feet away, but it really wont affect the PC.

Actualy the magnet is very small, so dont worry about it. And if you are wondering, the magnent only weighs around 5-8lbs. The Z-5500's weigh around 10-13lbs, and my HT sub's magnent alone wieghs in at 38lbs

Yeah, I was about to say that I thought that whole magnet stuff turned out to be more of a myth than anything.

Yup - the magnet on a HD is VERY VERY strong, and sits like 1 micron away from the platter. In order for a magnet outside of the HD case to really affect the platters, it would have to be sick strong...

What about the physicsal effects from the sub? The sub from my 5500's makes the side fo my computer rattle, i worry about vibrations being transfered to my hard drives.

i setup LCD screens for a guy with a carputer for a guy in a GMC, he had 2 mojo 15" that made the roof flex, the carputer was right next to it (like touching the box close) and took a lot of abuse. never had problems. i remember it because it was so painful.

If you properly mounted it securely, you would be just fine. But do be wary for the day as you hear the drive start bouncing around lol.

I was being a wise ass If you have a powerful enough sub (beleive me, the 5500 sub aint), you could definatly destroy a HDD while in a standard PC case. I once saw a video of what a 6000w 5 15" brahma array did to the bolts on a car. Was absolutly insane, spun the nuts right off. So just think of that, and imagine the teeny little HDD screws you use to mount it. Not to mention all the other precious delicate stuff in there.

Moral of the message? Dont put uber subs next to your computer, or your head.

if u had subs that did that much damage, i'd be more worried about your lungs collapsing then your computer dying. :P

Not to mention I hope he had an armored car to handle all that bass... I believe 5 15" competition subs would blow the windows out of a regular car, amoung other things.

He had that nifty 3M vualt glass, that stuff they use to stock 80mm shells and lower. And as for the car, since it didnt blow up, I assume it was armored or something. But yeah, crazy insanely stupid lol. But he was nailing huge SPL, like 180+.
