Well, don't let him touch the weapon or else something really bad might happen.

What happens when he touches you (no, not like that!)?

Even SuSE Linux can run out of memory and freeze when dealing with large .jpg's. Thank the Big Bopper for Ctrl-Alt-Backspace! But a hard crash is unusual. Not that I haven't done it. I can crash anything, and not on purpose.

Glad that I don't know your friend. We'd be blacklisted!

I've frozen SuSE(6.0, 6.2) while opening two largeish .jpg's, one after the other. With 128 Mb, maxing out the Ram isn't too difficult. One way to free up some Ram is to, ta daah, open up a ~3 Mb .jpg. Sometimes opening another ~3-5Mb after the first will also help. After you close them, you'll free maybe 25 Mb. The catch? You have to do this while there's still enough(~10 Mb) free Ram left to handle the files!
With 256 Mb on the board, the open and close trick frees up very little Ram, btw.

I'm sure there is a proper way to release a lot of Ram, sorry, I don't know the command.

KDE alone can use 63 mb, easily. If adding Ram to this box isn't practical, a GUI that's lighter on Ram could be a good idea. You might investigate Black Box.

If your friend is thinking about an IT career, perhaps specializing in software might be indicated.

oh dear...

Do you really need to reinstall. Have you just tried Ctrl-Alt-BS or Ctrl-Alt-Del or a hard reboot?

PS Upgrade the RAM. There is really no excuse for only having 64Meg (I have 384 ;-)

I have never had a problem with SUSE 7 when I had 128?
